I was raised catholic, but I never had a strong belief. I went to church because my family went. When I turned 17 or 18, I wasn't forced to go, so I stopped. I still sort of believed in some sort of god into my 20's or so. I never gave it much thought.
But as I did start to think about it, religion made less sense than ever. By its very definition, a miracle defies the laws of the universe. And I never ever saw anything that couldn't be explained as a natural phenomenon.
I also saw people who claimed to be religious use their religion that they claimed was one of love and peace to belittle people, to hurt them, to kill them. I actually had a catholic priest attempt to justify racism to me.
I reached the point where I decided consciously that if there was no evidence that any god or heaven or hell or such existed, and the people that associated themselves with these beliefs were that repulsive, I wanted no part of it.

A realization that everybody around you has to be to some extent, either retarded or a history of mental illness has finally come back with a vengence. There is no ceremony, atheism is not a religion, it's a personal view on the subject of religion as a whole.

I just stopped getting up of a sunday morning, stopped going to a particular building several days a week for various things. Moving across the state helped that as well.

There is no formal procedure for leaving a church, you just stop going. This comes in useful when you decide to return at a later date,

Having reached the conclusion that most of what I heard in church was incredible, I just left. No ceremonies, no rituals, those things are religious practices.

following an emotional argument outside the church-bldg, wherein the realization that
.... my questions weren't being answered
.... my needs were not being met
I just quit going
they might make a "nice social club" but deep questions are not answered and superficial rules become ridiculous

Pretty much just stopped going, and stopped praying.
I think an "unbaptizing" would have been a little dramatic. lol.

It should be as easy as leaving the grocery store - when you are done with it, you leave.
Unless you are in a cult - they are afraid for people to leave, for they may learn the truth, or think for themselves. (which wouldn't surprise me)
