It's one thing to say silently to yourself "I cheated on my spouse and caused much hurt and potentially unrepairable harm to my family." It's a completely different experience to say the same phrase aloud while someone else is listening.

It's kinda similar with going to Alcoholics Anonymous or Weight Watchers--having to say to a group of people "My name's Anne, and I'm an alcoholic" or having a group of people see and hear that you gained 3 pounds last week.

I can't describe it better than that. It's really difficult to do, but after you do it you feel like a huge weight is off your shoulders. Maybe you have to experience it or something similar to be able to understand.

For the person who is confessing to face their sins and proactively seek forgiveness

If you commit a crime and and leave ID behind or are seen by multiple people, the Cops know you're guilty, but if you turn yourself in before they can arrest you the courts still take that into consideration when your sentence is handed down.

its not exactly the same, but its the best analogy i could think of

It gives the priests a vicarious thrill.

If you are suspicious it is an incredible method of spying.
You are not merely eaves dropping on random converstions. You have people freely telling you all of their dirty little secrets.
It would be hard to imagine a more complete or effective form of domestic espionage.

God knows all is no different than the CIA or FBI informing you in interrogation that they know everything. A lovely trick.

"Confess your crimes now. You can not hide them. Confess and we will go easy on you."

-------------
I say that if they know everything then there is no need for me to open my mouth.

I am not a catholic....I am a Christian. Catholics, although they are Christian's believe differently, in certain things.
Yes, God knows all, but, He tells us in the Bible to confess our sins to another Christian. I believe this is to receive advice and consolation, from someone who believes the way you do. Someone, who would have your same beliefs. I think it is to ease your mind, rather than keeping it bottled up.

the tongue is powerful. when it confesses, it tames the tongue. also, it is a spiritual growth process. we are not to assume our salvation, but we are to work on a relationship with God.
talking to him through prayer is relating to him, confessing sin brings down the walls we build up around ourselves. then we feel more comfortable talking to him.

There is NO point to it. It's a control tactic. OPEN your eyes. It's all a bunch of lies.

Have you EVER read your bible, or do you let others read it for you and TELL you what it means?

Make sure you read it for yourself. It's full of amazing wonderful things, of which the Catholic church knows NOTHING about my friend.

Yes He knows everything about us . We are sinful by nature and when we sin we must repent and ask forgiveness.
Don't we say sorry when we have done something wrong ?
