I hated the way my grandma pressed me to pray and go to the church. I promised myself... When I be a grown-up and can take my own decisions what I am going to do is to stop going to the church... so did I.
I joined a lady after I finish my university studies in electrical engineering and promise not to get married... so did we
Now, I am about 50 with no parent to send me to church and a nice family: with two children, which is just a word to express something because they are 19 and 27. The older is finishing a master in Metrology and the other is running in Mechanics at the University with a special behavior....
BOTH OF THEM GO TO CATHOLIC CHURCH without anybody sending them and actually, my wife and me hate they do this, because that recalls those hardships we went on with our parents. What's in there?
I absolutely distrust God does this or that for me but my children press us to offer food or actions to God to live better... Sure that strikes me more than believing or not
Well, I thing in my desire to get away from that actitud, I gave the tools to my children the other way round... Unbelievable
Such is life... I do not know if they will change their mind after my death... with my heart I hope so.
Why because I think religion do not let a person be

I go once in a while... but only for a laugh and a little friendship.
My 87 year old Dad attends a very big community church and he needs a little help to get around so I get called upon to go with him from time to time. I actually enjoy going. The church services are not the only thing going on there. There's lots of tasty foods and it's fun to wander around and do a little people watching. There are plenty of kids of all ages and there are activities just for them... It's a great place, really, and it's just to bad they support spreading a nonsense belief.
I actually can see a time in the future when a place like that could become a gathering place for rational thinking people to enjoy. I imagine it as a family learning center where philosophies, politics and the sciences are all discussed and argued objectively ...but that's still a few years down the road, isn't it ?

I've often gone to church because I wanted some company, but I've been well aware from age 12 or so that God was a myth. Usually, the others become aware of my skepticism when I get mad at them for criticizing other religious denominations or performing other hypocrisies. They don't like those who won't fall in line, and I eventually leave them to their ignorance.

I am an atheist.
However, I will go to a church for various functions. It is, after all just another building.
I will go to a church to honor two people I love who are getting married. It is, after all, their choice to get married in a church. It is their choice to believe in God. Who am I to dispel that part of their life when it doesn't affect me.

I would agree with you. I think there are many more people who don't believe in god, who continue to go to church or at least profess to believe. They may not consider themselves "atheists", but in effect, they probably are. I do think that there are a lot of uncounted atheists out there, and I hope that when atheism becomes more acceptable in our society, many more will realize that that it's OK not to believe. Maybe then the tide will turn toward rational thought in this country.

many of them might go by habbit, but i think that the intelligent ones stays out of the froad to save what`s left of their reputation.
believing religions is the froad of all centuries, and it will take some time before the average level of intelligence of the mankind raises above the level of realizing that going to a church is going to a froad.

Not many, but some do, as a social thing more than a 'spiritual' one.
Personally, knowing what the religion I was brought up in has been responsible for, I don't ever want to be inside one of its churches ever again.

I have friends whom I suspect are like that.
I think they're closeted agnostics but they really enjoy the social aspect of their particular congregation.
It seems like there's a party/function just about every weekend.
A heart to heart conversation on religion usually leads to a lot of shoulder shrugging and "I don't like to think about it" type answers.
But they're happy, so - live and let live.
