The most common way is by the inflammation of the vocal chords.
A much more serious way to lose your voice is by some pathology/lesion to the nerves which serve the vocal chords.

Screaming really loud (because it can hurt your throat, dry it out), talking/singing for a long period of time without stopping, getting your tonsils taken out (won't be able to really talk for a while and your voice is all cracky), etc. Stuff like that.

yelling, singing too much, or just as simple as a cold or a flu. Some people have bronchitis which is a disease that effects your bronchial tubes, this causes your voice to be suppressed. So many more reasons too.

umm if your at a sports game and yell a LOT then youll lose your voice or if you get this cold or something i forgot what its called! srry i hope i could help!
