One slice of bread is called an open faced sandwich since there is no cover on it (even if you fold it over).
Sandwich is defined as 2 slices of bread with filling or meat.

Hi
I was taught to cook in the British army (1972-1979) and the way to make a sandwich is
1/Evenly cut two piece's of bread 1/8 of an inch thick,
2/cut of the crust's leaving an exact square of bread
3/spread (or put) filling on one side of bread (this must be 1/8 of an inch thick) and cover with the other piece of bread, then cut corner to corner, so you have 4 equal angel triangles

You are correct, the original sandwich is 2 slices of bread, with meat, cheese etc... but these days, it could be pita bread pocket sandwich... to each his own...
