I know you can not have open containers in the car but what about the trunk? It is a discussion I am having with my son.

I don't know FL law, but the rule is usually no open containers in a place that can be accessed from the passenger compartment. As a previous answer stated, if you have a fold down section of the rear seat, the trunk WOULD be assessable from the passenger compartment.

On the other hand, unless you appear intoxicated or are doing something else illegal/suspicious, why would anyone have reason to LOOK in the trunk?

In the trunk, out of reach and control. Yes. In the car, no.

Yes. As long as you're not intoxicated it's ok. I live in Florida and my dad and aunt both work for a county sheriff.

Techinically, it's considered garbage when you think about it.

No you can't; and I was nervous last weekend because we went to a party and it started raining -- put some empty cans/bottles in the cooler to keep from making a mess and they were in the back of our car. I was afraid I was going to get pulled over.

Yes you can but just don't be drunk while carrying them.
