...how upset people get when you don't give them the answer they want? I was the only person to answer a question about learning a language without help. Since I speak 3 languages, I gave a serious answer to the question. The result: the asker wrote, "I wish I could give you negative stars for that answer." Now I"M upset!!!!

Sweetheart, I know it's upsetting but try not to take it personally. The internet is full of idiots. If these people don't appreciate the answers they're given they shouldn't ask in the first place. The other day I answered a question and someone emailed me a really nasty message full of expletives and hate. I was really shocked at first and took it personally but then when I thought about it I realised that it was the other person's problem, not mine. What kind of loser sends a hateful email to a person they don't even know? Don't think any more about what that person wrote, just carry on answering as many questions as you want.

Yes, there is a lot of material here for students of human psychology. Often people are asking questions in the hope of receiving confirmation of what they want the answer to be. However, I have answered a couple of questions recently where in honesty I had to be somewhat critical of the person asking and was surprised to be given best answers for them. Each time it was because the asker realised that I had gone to some trouble and was sincere and honest in what I had to say. I admired them in turn for their objectivity. However, on another occasion when I answered a question factually, thinking that the asker was seeking information, I realised that I had fallen into a trap, when he sent me a sarcastic e-mail accusing me of giving him totally useless information and saying that next time he wanted useless information he would be sure to ask me in the first place. What a nasty man!
Conclusion: it is worth doing this because of the decent, sincere people who really are looking for answers to their questions, but one mustn't allow the unpleasant minority to get one down. I don't blame you for being upset, but that asker of yours is obviously someone with problems. Don't allow him to become one of yours!

In fairness, your answer wasn't very helpful...Certainly no one can truly master a language without help, but some people have learned languages on their own. Clearly he was hoping for an answer from someone who had. (Perhaps equally clearly, there aren't legions of them.) Your answer would have been perfect for a question along the lines of "Is it possible to learn a language without help?"
That being said, the negative stars comment was uncalled-for. If he didn't like your answer, he should have let it go to voting or deleted the question.

There are a lot of silly children on the web. This is a surreal world where the worst answers are chosen as best. I asked a question which I think or believe to be an intelligent one ( nothing obscene) and was attacked by smart asses that seem to have nothing better to do. Upset? me?

Dear, get over it. This is the Internet. If something that happens on the Internet upsets you, you need to leave it alone and just continue to live in the real world until you learn that since manners no longer exist for anyone else, they should no longer exist for you as well.

It happened to me once also. Some guy asking about "mind mapping" or something close. He just called a**h***s those who tried to help him.

It wasn't in the end worth being upset.

Several weeks later, I noticed he asked a similar question, without being answered again.

He might be hopeless.

get over it. the guy is probably angered because you are so much more intelligent than he is at learning languages. Are you going to let a jerk like that upset you? Laugh him off to the boon docks

People do it all the time. All us sane people can do is give the best answers we can, and don't let them convert us!

I haven't witnessed anything that extreme.

But its okay, just rise above it. Lots of other people will be appreciating your answers elsewhere :)
