Bonus question: I'll be leaving the pier around 8PM to catch a midnight flight out of LAX -- is there a bus that will take me back to the airport that late, or should I just call a cab? (If I go with the cab, is there a particular taxi service you would recommend in the area & will it be less than $40?) Thanks!!

I work at LAX. Take the #3 Santa Monica Big Blue Bus. Get off at the "C" parking lot, thats the bus depot for LAX. And get on the shuttle (its free) to come back to the airport. Departure level is upstairs. Simple. And cheap.

from Lax terminal area you first catch Lax "C" shuttle
this bus will take to the City Bus terminal
then you can take a Santa Monica Big blue bus line 3(either the local or Rapid would take to Santa Monica
direct to Santa Monica, the fare is 75cents each way
the closest stop to the Santa Monica pier
is 4th and Colorado, and its just about 3 block walk to the Pier
for your return the bus stop is right in front of the Santa Monica Place mall
the Santa Monica #3 operates until 11:15pm (last bus to the airport)
so you have the follow buses departing 4th st and Santa Monica(closet time point to 4th/Colorado) at 7:55pm, 8:15pm,8;35pm and 8:55pm
which should get to lax in time

I'd go with MobileMarks suggestion and take the Blue Bus from the LAX city bus center. It is a fast & cheap way to get to Santa Monica.

Josh, this is one of the few times when a taxi would be your best bet. The pier is 13 miles north of LAX. If you don't know the area I would do this both ways...Should be a lot less than $40.00...

I belive you can catch the #3 bus - it would be best to call them and get their schedule to be sure.

Also you didn't say what day - on a Sunday it could be a problem as they run a limited schedule on the weekends....
