No, you have to go through a commissioning source. ROTC, The naval Academy, Officer candidate school and so on.

PS. Ya still have to go through a commissioning source. There si no way to work you way up as you put it. In order to attend officer candidate school, you have to have a certain number of college credits already and be recommended, as well as time in service, time in grade requirements. Plus, darn near walk on water. The other sources, ROTC, are in accredited universities and you would never be enlisted unless you ETS'd and attended college. Another, the naval Academy, is by appointment. Warrant officers is another matter entirely, and they are not commissioned officers. They also have requirements, usually time in service, time in grade as well as a number of college credits and the person putting in an application being from a certain career field. They don't just take you, you have to have what they want.

Yes you can, but it's a fairly long process. First you have to make Staff Sergeant, and have so many years in service, 6, from what I can recall. Then you can apply for the Warrant Officer program. If you're successful at becoming a Warrant officer you'll need to serve 6 years in that capacity before being eligible to apply for the Limited Duty Officer (LDO) program. It can take, I believe, 12 years minimum service to become an officer, if you go through the ranks.

Ooh, it can be done. A term used for them is "mustang officers". Typically you'll have to work your up and prove you're experienced and suitable enough to attend an Officer Candidate School.

In some extreme circumstances, NCOs with enough rank are promoted straight to a commissioned rank without any further training. This was especially notable in WW2, when the heavy loss of officers due to deaths, injury and occasionally their incompetence necessitated the promotion of senior soldiers in the unit such as platoon or company sergeants.

Yes you can work your way up to Warrant Officer 1 and 2, and go from there. I was in Marines and you have live the Marine Core, it takes an immense amount of time to get to Warrant Officer, but it can be done, without going to OCS.

I easily have wondered a similar element myself. i imagine it has to do with the floor pressure function they take. The Marines are meant to be the perfect characteristics of both the military and military blended at the same time. possibly the military ranks are more suitable ideal than the military.

Nope. Either you're enlisted rank or officer grade. But you can apply for officer school and possibly make it that way. Best of luck.
