Yes. This style of meditation has been practiced and explored in different traditions and cultures. The Jesus Prayer in Orthodox Christianity, "Centering Prayer" in Catholic Christianity, dhikr practice in Sufi Islam, and of course mantra meditations in Vedantic Hinduism.

Many, many studies have been done on the physiological effects of mantra meditation, especially Transcendental Meditation. Lowered heart rate, decreased blood pressure, changes in Galvanic skin resistance, alpha rhythms in brain EEG ... all indicative of relaxation and restful alertness, and all correlated with healthy effects.
