The IRS would be happy to take anyone's hard earned money, citizen or not. All you have to do is have them fill out an application for an "ITIN" (individual taxpayer identification number), a number used in place of the social for those who don't have one.

(pages 13 and 35)

As far as I know, the Department of Homeland Security is not combing through IRS returns looking for ITINs of illegal aliens. Why should they? ITINs are the numbers of legitimate workers trying to pay taxes.

It's actually the opposite. If DHS investigates tax records, they're far more likely to use state unemployment records (quarterly returns filed by employers) which contain the names and socials of all hired workers. They will then try to track down those with names and socials that don't match. These are the workers who have given the wrong socials, and are likely to be filing fraudulently (or not at all).

These are also the employers who file fraudulently by allowing workers to continue working contrary to immigration law. Employers are supposed to actually check and make copies of social security cards upon hiring workers. This has been true for decades. It's nothing new.

Just like everybody else. If they do not have an Individual Tax Identification Number, the application should be attached to the tax return.

You will need to fill out a W7 and get an "Individual Taxpayer Identification Number". The W7 gets mailed in with your return. You can not efile.

You can't. If they have no social security number or tax id number, they are here illegally and will be deported if they make their presence known.

Don't they have to have a S.S. # to get driver's license?
Everyone should have license checked, if they don't have it or can't show s.s. then be reported.
To have a job hould have one, but I know not all self employed places care.
I wish there was some way to do this, it just isn't right!!
So many can get paid cash or in some other name.
