If you are just going to use food coloring you will need both black and red. Or you can use the paste. They sell these in craft stores or craft sections in your Kmart, Walmart and Target. Look in the cake decorating sections in the craft department. With these pastes you are not adding extra liquid and if you use the liquid the more red you add the more hot pink it becomes, it will never be red. That is why you need the black, if you can find it. Good Luck...

Hi !!!
Start with red food coloring & then little by little add black to it.
"FYI":
Tinted icing, will turn darker overnight, especially the red family, so make it 24 hours before a shade lighter than desired. (On the flip side, icing will fade if exposed to sunlight or heat.) Afterwards, then decide to increase the color or tone it down, if need be. Remember any additions will darken over time, too.
However, the color you can achieve will vary depending on what type you use. I always recommend practicing with a batch of icing and letting it sit overnight as a test. (Take notes on the color(s) and the amounts used and how long it sat.)
You'll never be able to duplicate the same color in another batch, but at least you'll get an idea about how much the color changes.
--------------HERE'S A GREAT RECIPE, IF YOU NEED ONE...
Magnolia's Vanilla Buttercream Frosting
Makes enough for one 2-layer 9-inch cake or 2 dozen cupcakes*
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
6 to 8 cups confectioners’ sugar
1/2 cup milk
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Place the butter in a large mixing bowl. Add 4 cups of the sugar and then the milk and vanilla. On the medium speed of an electric mixer, beat until smooth and creamy, about 3-5 minutes. Gradually add the remaining sugar, 1 cup at a time, beating well after each addition (about 2 minutes), until the icing is thick enough to be of good spreading consistency. You may not need to add all of the sugar. If desired, add a few drops of food coloring and mix thoroughly. (Use and store the icing at room temperature because icing will set if chilled.) Icing can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
*Note:
If you are icing a 3-layer cake, use the following recipe proportions:
1 1/2 cups (3 sticks) unsalted butter
8 to 10 cups confectioners’ sugar
3/4 cup milk
1 tablespoon vanilla extract

I would think that you would just have to add some red food coloring until the frosting is red enough for you. The best frosting for this would probably be cream cheese frosting.
