I'm about to buy some Ebony granite gloss worktop, but Iv just been told that it scratches really easily and is not worth buying. Has anyone ever had it and can tell me whether its worth buying or not.. plus what is the alternative without spending hundreds and hundreds?

In view of the varying answers to this question, I can only assume that there must be several different grades of granite.
We paid a fortune for granite five years ago.
It was high gloss and you could see the gloss had gone mat where we use it.It was badly scratched, and to be honest we wish we had never bought granite.
It is only 15mm thick with an edge that makes it look 30mm thick
It had got so bad that I have just replaced it with a 38mm thick plastic laminate worktop.

I believe Granite is something which you must take very good care of. No it doesn't stain so easily but with wine it does. If your kitchen is not a busy place as big family's kitchens are, then you can buy granite worktop without a second thought. The elegance and beauty it adds to your kitchen is outstanding.

Granite is very hard to scratch with things such as knives but it will scratch. We chose a granite with multiple colors in it so any scratches will be harder to see.

That was 9 years ago and we don't have any scratches yet. We don't use our knives on it but that is to keep the knives sharp. We don't drag things such as ceramic pots or other things that might have a hard surface. My wife uses vinegar on it all the time as a disinfectant and it has had just about any liquid you can find in a kitchen spilled on it at one time or the other including lemon juice and grape juice

Usually the supplier has samples of the granite you want. Have you tried to scratch it to see how hard it is to scratch. I think you will be surprised.

By the way, Corian and similar materials are very easy to scratch and burn. Their only saving grace is the fact that you can have their surface sanded and polished.

It is definitely the usual question about worktop products. http://www.kitchen-worktops.net or http://www.houseofcorinth.com will give you free advise in wide selection of worktop services and products. You will be amazed there is cheaper worktop than Corian and Granite with same quality which is tri-stone

If it is quality granite it should not scratch, you may be referring to standard worktop material. In any event, don't cut on them, use chopping boards, and don't slide things over them. Granite is very good, but very unforgiving, your crockery will lose every time you knock some over. (you don't need to drop anything, just banging it will break crockery or glass).

Yes, Granite Gloss worktops has tiny holes that leads to staining it, I recommend Corian or Tri-stone for best quality and prices. You can try http://www.houseofcorinth.com/tri-stone-worktops-uk and http://www.houseofcorinth.com/corian-worktops-uk.

Personal opinion counts I suppose, if you like it g for it. But..... I have always stuck to the old adage If you cant match it, then contrast. I feel it will all look as if you have made a very bad attempt to match. Also I feel that a complete contrast like black and white would be way over the top, like a black and white road crossing. Sorry if this has been of no help at all, but you did ask! At the end of the day its your choice, plenty of magazines about to select from try a few.

the alternative is something called corian i think, which looks just as good and is more hard wearing as you have to be careful with any granite surface esp with spills from any acids like vinegar or lemon juice etc
