Actually the answer is very simple. proper food and not kitty crack (dry) Check the links out at the bottom of the post

Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s health
Contrary to what you may have heard, dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.
Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s and a host of other problems. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods.
The problems with it are that they are loaded with carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process. Most of the moisture a cat needs is gotten
out of the food and 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Also, most use horrible ingredients and don't use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive.
You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn't have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all. Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. You've come to the right place.

First, know that cats need to lose weight slowly. No more than 1 pound per month. Unless you have a scale you can use, that makes it very difficult to measure progress!

I used the following method to get Poppy to lose weight. She WAS 25 pounds; I don't yet know how much she's lost. Sophie, who was only 11 pounds, lost 2 pounds since last year. I'm so thrilled! So I know this works.

From my blog:
In a nutshell, most cats are fat because they've been fed too much (free-feeding or indulging them) and because they're fed dry food which is NOT appropriate food for them due to the grain/carb/sugar content. Cats are obligate carnivores who need to eat a high meat-based protein diet, which is also high in fats and low in carbs.

Many vets, who are sadly ignorant on the topic of proper cat nutrition, will recommend prescription diet foods (usually dry). Cats are expected to lose weight on a starvation diet of 1/4 or 1/3 cup of food per day. Everyone is miserable in these situations.

The solution is to switch the fat cat (and any others in the household as well) to a good quality canned food. Because these foods are species appropriate, the cat will lose weight at a safe, slow pace (no more than 1 pound per month). Switching foods needs to occur slowly, and if you're trying to get a kibble junkie to eat canned food, that will happen naturally.

That's it. Easy as pie. Not only will fat cats lose weight, but it and any others in the home will reap many benefits of eating a speciies appropriate diet.

Sure you can get a cat to lose weight.
Don't feed him so much and give him some form of exercise.
Play with him with a toy that encourages physical activity.
There are lots of toys that allow a cat to run and jump.
Wands with "birds" on the end. Laser lights to make them chase the light. Go to a pet store and purchase a few toys and make the effort to give him some of your attention and exercise. This accomplishes 2 things.
You and your cat spend time 'bonding' and also increases his activity level.
You both win.
I have a toy box full of cat toys and on any given day we have play time.
Also don't leave food out all the time.
Feed him 2 times a day only. No unlimited treats either.
Don't let food sit in the bowl. if he doesn't eat all the food you give him, remove the rest.
Do not give an unlimited amount of food.
In no time..he will be slimmer and will love you for it because you will have spent time with your pet.
Good luck.

It's not easy to get cats to lose weight. My cat was heavy when I adopted him and found that he would throw up on diet food. So we feed him smaller portions of regular food. Don't free feed (leave food out all the time). Measure out the food carefully and feed him twice a day. Follow the package directions and feed the amount for the weight you want him to be. And try and get him to exercise by playing with toys. Vets will tell you that cats need to lose slowly - losing too fast is bad for their health.

He is conscious you experience undesirable for him so he acts that thank you to get greater foodstuff. refer to the vet and locate out how a lot foodstuff he desires. We have been given our cat and it became into 27 pounds. It took over 2 years yet she is now 8 lbs. It is going sluggish on the initiating yet then he will have the skill to circulate greater and have the skill to unfastened quicker. verify he would not unfastened to a lot to quickly. he would be a lot happier while he's thinner and can circulate and play returned. as quickly as he's all the way down to the burden he could be you will could desire to play together with his foodstuff. that's via fact he would be greater lively and could desire greater foodstuff although that's going to be a at the same time as in the previous he there. you would be including years to his life so do no longer supply it to his unhappy looks.

I wish I had the answer, I have the same problem. I have reduced the food by almost half without any visible results for several months. All that has resulted is that my two cats now fight more often (I think fatty Buster is hogging the food but how can I diet him without starving Gracie?)

Have you talked to your Vet about his weight?
If you have and are feeding him the recommended food/diet that was perscribed then he should eventually start to loose some weight. It took time for him to put it on, and will take time to take it off, Just like if we were trying to loose weight.
If you have just started trying to do it on your own, you may not be feeding him properly to induce weight loss.
Speak to your vet about your concerns.

My cat is also over weight, and we have not gotten her to lose any weight either. I don't know if it is really possible for cats to lose weight. Of course, there are special foods that have been invented for this purpose. I would recommend asking your cats vet.
