Here's what I do.

1. box up anything that you have around the house that reminds you of him. Pictures, gifts he gave you ... anything. You don't have to destroy it - but at least box it up and put in the attic or back of the closet - get it out of your sight.

2. make changes. I seem to change my hair cut or color - sort of a "new look - new me - new start" sort of thing.

3. get involved. Now is a great time to learn to do something you always wanted (I took up swing dancing after my last break up) or get involved in a volunteer work. - Like animals - volunteer at your local animal shelter or rescue group. Learning to swing dance gave me some place to be one night a week - so I did not sit around the house missing him.

4. get back in touch with your friends. Too often, we get involved with a man and let our girlfriends fall to the wayside. Call up those friends and get them to meet you for lunch. If you have to - apologize for ignoring them.

5. have a pity party. Take one night (usually a weekend when you don't have to work). Eat what ever you want, throw pillows, cry, stomp, scream, yell - what ever you have to do. You have to get the hurt out. Cry as hard as you can. When you think you can't cry anymore - force it - make yourself cry until there are no more tears inside. I usually end up wearing myself out and falling asleep.

Then when you wake up the next morning - no more pity party - no more poor me- you get up - and you move forward. The hole is still there but it does heal with time.

If you see them daily (in work, school, train, ..etc) try to take a different route but if you can't just try to talk to someone else.
Over the internet delete his screenname, email, all contact with him.
Try not to talk about him, thats the best way of moving on.

Time heals all wounds. In the meantime, try making some friends and keep yourself busy.

if this is the first time. then the best thing is to hang out more with your friends, do things that you love. try to make yourself busy with things, so that you would not think about it so much. hope this helps.
