My friend told me this. But don't be too quick to judge. She said that her mom heard it on the news. If this is true, i'll be horrified. My mom used to eat a bag of popcorn for lunch everyday. (I don't know why.) And she did it for a while. Please have a good answer. I don't want any disrespectful, hurtful, or stupid answers. Thank you.

The new story your friend was referring to was pertaining to butter flavored micro-wave popcorn. The chemical diacetyl which is used in the butter flavor used in microwave popcorn has been shown to cause lung ailments in factory workers that make these popcorns, it has been label "popcorn lung" there was just a recent case that showed a consumer had also contracted this ailment. The risk comes from inhaling this chemical, and in the case of the consumer, he was eating 2-3 bags of buttered micorwave popcorn a day, and his favorite thing to do was open the bag, and stick his nose over the rising steam and inhale the smell he loved so much, that is how he got sick, but now that he has been diagnosed, his symptoms have lessened and he is expected to have a full recovery. The part about it taking off 5 years of your life is false, but it can kill you if you go to the extreme's this guy did, and not get treated for it. The link below is an article on this case, as well as offering links to other information about diacetyl. Your friend is partially right, that consuming large quantities can make you ill, but not take off 5 years. Hope this helps...

This is Not true. I think your friend heard incorrectly. Besides, How could this be true?
You're eating corn. And Microwaving food doesn't hurt people. Unless you have a pace maker, then you aren't supposed to be around microwaves because it can disrupt the way the pace maker works.
But eating Pop Corn and other foods heated or cooked in the Microwave is safe. Don't worry.
You and Your Mom are just fine.

If opening a bag of cooked popcorn after microwaving it shortened my life by 5 years, I'd have died many years ago...or my life span was originally supposed to be at least 150 years.

I'm not trying to be disrepectful or any of those other things you mentioned. It's the truth...I've microwaved and opened many bags of popcorn and if 5 years was removed from my life each time I did, I'd be long gone by now.

Look at it this way...doing it 15 times would have shortened my life span by 75 years, if it was true. How about your Mom? Has she done it 15 times?

No ! Some workers in a popcorn factory got a lung ailment
from the chemicals used to make the butter flavor but I haven't heard of any problems with any consumers .

The chemicals used to make the butter flavoring, when a freshly popped bag is opened and the steam is inhaled, can cause a condition called "popcorn lung".

Make like Bill Clinton, and Do not inhale! LOL!

They found that a chemical in microwave popcorn can give people lung conditions. But this is mostly for people who work in popcorn factories, and people who eat lots of microwave popcorn.

You didn't tell us much in regards to your Mom's habit of eating popcorn. Did she eat it once a day for a year? Five years?

If that were true, many people would be dead by now. I've opened at least 20 bags which computes to 100 years off my life. Nope, don't think it's true.

It's mostly for the people that work in the factories because when they use the butter flavoring they have chemicals in them. But don't worry, if that was true, I would probably be dead by now. ~*Alyssa*~
