Our 8 month old male dog mated with a female in heat. I was aware that they might be curious but did not realize that they might acutally perform. He was neutered at 5 months. Can
someone enlighted me a bit more please?

Oh yes they can still mate but no pups will be produced from the mating at all.
Just because the male is neutered dosn't mean he can't still mate with a female.

Yes neutered dogs can and will try to mate if there is a female in heat. I know many people with netuered males that have actually performed the act.

While a neutered male dog who had his surgery that recently might still remember what was supposed to be done when the female had that odor, most of the time, when neutered dogs mount, it's simply a dominance game.
Both neutered male and female dogs will mount as a game to prove which dog is alpha. That's why you see them side mount and mount the head as well as rear mount.
Dog's don't have sex for fun as humans do. They ONLY have sex to procreate!

I walked out the door one day and found my male hooked to a female from down the street .He had been fixed for 5 years I called my vet and they told me it is just like men he has no sperm but can still do his tricks the urge is less but he can still hook .

There's a difference between humping and mating Nedra. My little guy humps dogs at the dog park- but he tried to mate with a female min-pin in heat and tied to her- that was not about dominance- he wanted to procreate and didn't understand he was neutered.

Even if the male is neutered, which I commend you for having it done, they can still tie, but no puppies will be produced.
