Whilst the Rover V8s that I`ve had ( I`ve had 7 ! ) have all been in various saloon cars (P6`s and SDi`s)and not Range Rovers, all have had the same fault. They all leaked oil, usually from the main bearing seals. One had a porous block and self-destructed when it tried to run on water, and all them were, compared to other cars of similar engine size, absolutely gutless. I had access to a "dyno" and not one of them would put out more than 130 genuine BHP no matter how carefully they were setup. These were standard engines, not modified or "race" motors. I would`nt touch another one with somebody Else's bargepole !

Hi!
the answers you have got before are most likely to be from people who have never owned a Range Rover, as for me I have owned 6 of these lovelies.
The 3.9 V8 petrol engine is a dream, just the sound of one turns my head.
As for a 15 year old car being unreliable, bollocks! If they have been cared for then you will have a good chance it can go for another 15 years, you get what you pay for and these cars retailed in their day from around £26,000+.
I have only ever had to replace one clutch on any of mine, the most likely thing to go would probably be the power steering box check to see if it is dry, any fluid leakage, leave it alone.
The engine and gearbox usually have little or no problems too.
If there is a down side to these cars it is the fact that they do corrode a little due to the two opposing metals. The rear tail gates are a usual dodgy area, as are the inner wings.Just keep on top of maintainance.
The electrics can start to play up too, but I have never had a serious problem to fix out of the 6 I have had.
I love the comform and quality of these vehicles and currently drive my seventh, a 1994, 3.9 V8(converted to LPG!)
and a 2.5TDI Diesel Landrover Discovery.
they can be greedy when it comes to petrol consumption, but they are not on their own in that respect.
They are easy to work on, parts are not THAT expensive I am a girl and I maintain mine easily!
I would give it a go, you can always sell it on,There are plenty of enthusiasts out there!

I have never been let down by my Range Rover, I think from some of the comments the bad ones (and there are bad cars in every model & make) all got shipped to the US!
If the car has a full service history I think it is a reliable car.
1000's of RR enthusiasts can't be wrong, and the Queen of England has one.....:0)

you can rely on it breaking down expensivley. usualy in the vicinity of resume speed on a nasty cold wet night. should you purchase one of these, keep your cell phone charged and the tow-man on speed dial.
