With all due respect, a bad childhood and your past can cause mental disturbances... borderline personality disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression are just a few.

Though therapy, and making an effort, doing the WORK it takes to cope with our pasts, can be very helpful.

You can do a yahoo search for causes of mental illnesses and see what i mean.

take care of YOU.

There are definitely things in your environment that can affect your MH., but for there to be a true mental illness, not just a temporary condition, there has to be a physical reason. The main reason for long-term depression, and other disorders is a imbalance of the chemicals in the brain. (This is a very general overview not a specific diagnosis). Anti-psych, meds are designed to restore that balance, thus easing the symptoms.

I believe if you have a mental illness, you were probably born with it. I don't think any mental illness is brought on by your childhood. When I was a kid, I was spanked regularly with anything my Mom could reach....a hairbrush, wooden spoon, paint stirring stick, ruler, yardstick,or flyswatter. I'm just fine. I graduated from college, have a great career and am mentally stable. And I love my Mom. I deserved every one of those spankings. In fact, if she wouldn't have spanked me to behave, I probably would have never turned out so good. The therapist is just trying to blame someone. Lots of people like to blame others for everything. She is one of those kind of liberal Democrats.

If you are asking if the environment plays a part in mental illness. it most often does. but i found that you, the individual, play a bigger part. the individual must think about what happens to them and decide what they will believe about what happens.
