Hi, I have found that getting quotes on line for full coverage has left me hounded with unwanted email and phone calls. This time I want to get liability alone for a old (1990) vehicle that I have no concern about replacing if I should have an accident. My question is: Can you give me a ballpark figure of what I may have to pay or perhaps an insurance provider that you may believe has the best rates? My local agents hound me to take full coverage. NOT WANTED!!!!! I gave very little money for this vehicle and will not be using very much at all. Thanks for your input. Missouri vehicle in small town.

Call Safe Auto- They are all about the minimum coverage requirements- I have a friend that uses them and he loves them.

you are correct not to want full coverage on a 1990 auto, the cost would most likely be more than the car is worth; also, most companies will not insure a 1990 auto; the cut off is 10 to 14 years as a guideline; (unless you are financing, but in your case you are not)

all you need is liability like you asked;

look in the phone book for insurance agents; look for ones that state they insure many companies; dont call state farm or allstate since they only write business for them only; i believe nationwide and american family does also;

get the numbers of 2; i would then get a piece of paper and call both; let them quote you the company and the prices; then after you talk to both of them, sit down and compare and then make a decision;

as for state auto, dont suggest unless you have a bad driving record or accidents; state auto is for "high risk" drivers and they charge out the wazoo;;;;;;; also in high risk, the policies usually lack certain coverages and can deny for many things since they are insuring for a lot of bad drivers;

also; state auto only insures for minimum coverage in your state; dont buy the minimum if you can afford more;

ie; i live in indiana; the minimum is 25/50; i used to have 100/300 but when i increased it to 250/500 the premium was about $40 more per year; the reason for the higher limits is that i am a claim adjuster and have seen too many times when people get the minimum coverage and it is not enough to pay in an accident; if for instance you are in a 3 car rear end accident and the 2 cars you hit are new cars, the damages could exceed 50k and then the other companies will go after you personally for the difference; ie your home equity, savings etc;

good luck

My guess is your local agents encourage full coverage because they have had too many customers not get it - wreck and then give the agent a bunch of grief when they realize that there is no coverage for your car and no rental car for you to drive.

You may want to speak to an independent agent- one who writes for many companies (not captive - like Allstate, State Farm who writes for only one company). An independent agent may be able to help you find a lower quote b/c they can get quotes from more than one company.

The only entity that can answer your question is a licensed sales agent or insurance carrier that does business in Missouri. Pick up the phone and call the insurance company direct, do not use an online service that provides you quotes from several carriers. allstate.com, farmers.com, geico.com, progressive.com, hartford insurance, AIG, AMICA.com, libertymutual.com......all these carriers allow online quotes OR a 24hour center that can quote you over the phone.
