Yes. It is rice. In many cultures, rice is associated with prosperity and fertility. Throwing rice on newly married couple expresses blessings and best wishes for their prosperity and to beget number of children.

At weddings that I have attended, once you made it into the car, there were always just a few more handfulls thrown, but once you drove off, everyone was just waving. But I have also seen couples use other items instead of rice...bubbles, butterflies being released, and evern bird seed.

Yes, it was traditionally rice as a symbol for blessings of prosperity. People have changed it to bird seed in recent years because of fears of killing birds; however, contrary to popular belief, rice will not kill birds. There's a bigger danger of people slipping and falling on it.
Bubbles are good because they leave no mess.

Not any more. They have switched to bird feed. The word finally got out that rice can harm birds; they ingest it, drinking water causes it to swell and it ca kill birds
Some also just blow soap bubbles now or throw rose petals - which is a nuisance to clean up after. Bubbles are cute and no hassle send off!!

Rice used to be popular now people are starting to throw bird seed because its better for the birds. You could also used bubbles or sparklers when you walk out.

Depends on how eco-conscious they are. It's been found that birds eating the rice have been know to die when it swells in their stomachs, so lately they've been throwing bird seed instead.

sure, or bird seed. The rice killing birds thing is an old wives tale. Frankly churches prefer that you throw bird seed because then they really don't have to clean it up....the local bird population does it for them...
