and can you expect them to respect other people's beliefs without trying to convince other people that their (fundies') beliefs are the truth, so other people must believe the same thing?

or is that type of expectation too much to ask from Bible-fundies?

I wish they could agree who God is.

If they were willing to listen to other peoples beliefs, they probably wouldn't be Bible-fundies in the first place. That's not to say that there is no hope for them, only that they have to make the first step towards questions their beliefs.

In general, the people who want to share their religious beliefs with you don't want you to share your beliefs with them. With some preparation you can make any fundie look like a dumbass, but their response is only to study the bible deeper instead of actually accepting something from another perspective. You can't budge someones beliefs that are based on emotions such as fear unless they find a way to deal with underlying emotional issues that cause them to cling to their religion.

Emotional beliefs won't be countered by rational argument, no matter how well constructed. Maybe hypnotism is the way to go, but otherwise I'd just avoid this person if possible.

Is there a way to make those who profess any particular belief system or finite lack thereof to listen to other people's beliefs than their own?

Belief: 1: a state or habit of mind in which trust or confidence is placed in some person or thing
2: something believed; especially : a tenet or body of tenets held by a group
3: conviction of the truth of some statement or the reality of some being or phenomenon especially when based on examination of evidence

By definition belief is a conviction held to be true by a believer. Yes, I can respect your beliefs, but by the wording of your question you indicate an intrinsic inability to respect mine. Respect is not agreement.

No, if you could convince them then they did not really believe. Our faith for us is absolute truth and outside this truth there is no truth. That would be like trying to convince me my eyes are blue when I know for a a fact they are brown. As for trying to convince others, Jesus commands us to go out into the world and make disciples of all people. I share my faith if you choose not to believe I am not going to get into a debate with you. Not everyone will believe. Judas lived with Christ and if he had truly believed he was the son of God he would have never betrayed him. There were many who saw Jesus and did not believe. Why should it be any different now. My calling is to share my faith, not beat you about the head till you believe.

No there is no way and yes it is too much to ask.
I really need to amend this question in the light of azlyn's answer. Some times on YA it is hard to remember that most people are not like the ranting fanatics you get on YA...not just Christians by the way.
azlyn seems more like the Christians I know in RL who are mostly kind people with a strong ethic. In fact one of my closest friends is a devout Christian and daughter of medical missionaries. I suspect she prays for me but then I pray for her. Most people of all faiths and no faith are just people trying to make sense of the world some think they have an answer some of us are still looking. By the way azlyn don't be afraid of Islam it is a beautiful and austere religion with much to teach if we'll listen, particularly the Sufis.
To the Moslems on YA a slighly belated.
Happy Eid Mubarak

Bible believing Christians have to listen to other's beliefs all the time... on TV, in our public schools for 13 years & 4 years of any secular university after that. They have to listen to other's beliefs every single day of their lives, if they are not a recluse!

Many Christians don't say a word to others who don't believe because they don't want others to dislike them or think of them as a judgemental friend. Only those Bible believing Christians who love others so much that they're willing to tell them God's Truth, are the ones that share what they believe.

If you've had others try to "convince" you to believe the Truth in the Bible, then you must have friends who really care about you. Think of it that way. It is your decision to accept or reject God. But God will never reject you when you come to Him for answers, comfort, & love.

what's undesirable approximately fundies, is that 3 of them have the supply of nukes and can wipe out something of the international with one word. by using the way, fundies are available ALL religions, no longer in basic terms christianity.

I'm all ears, though I wouldn't call myself a "Fundie", and BTW whoever made that word up is a dork. Anyway, if you have anything to say I'm willing to listen, and I won't say a single word the entire time you talk.

I've listened to other people's beliefs. I have some pagan friends who I love dearly. Islam is just to scary to listen to closely to however. My pagan friends don't believe in killing people to go into their "summerland" as they call it. They don't believe in beating their wives and they don't believe that they have to kill anyone who doesn't believe as they do. Sure, they believe in many gods and goddesses, I can deal with that little by little but I don't stuff my beliefs down their throats so we get along.

Grace unto you... from God our Father

Merlin (1998 TV) Movie shows how, at the end,
where real magic is, after the unreal magic fails.

Before/After? Natural first/Spiritual afterward!
Law/Grace? Fail/Succeed? Endure to the end?

Bible says it this way: "from such turn away": 2Tim3.

Song says it this way:
I fought the law and the law won.
Bible example: seven sons of Sceva.

Paul THE APOSTLE says it this way:
I flushed law as dung, and grace won.

The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.

Are you going to sit there and listen to what they have to say about their beliefs as well? How long are you going to sit there and try to understand all about their many and varied beliefs?
Now with that as a reference, how long do you expect them to sit and listen to yours? Healthy debate is great, but don't get into an arguing match and hope to win. You have to go into the debate ready to accept that you probably aren't going to change this person's mind. That's ok, they aren't going to change yours either. That's not the purpose of debate. Learning is the purpose of debate.
