There is a very thin thight weave carpet in a bedroom.,this carpet is sitting on old uneven floorboards. the carpet has leveled out the surface but we want to replace the carpt now.I have some laminate leftover from a job I did before and was wondering if this "thin weave carpet " would act as an underlay. I have gotten different opinions from different people. Laminate will be a cleaner option for this small room just curious as to what beople think ?

No, you may not lay your laminate flooring over the existing carpet and uneven floor boards. Laminates will tolerate only 1/4" of variation in the substrate with the proper underlayment. It will buckle and gap and ultimately fail if you do the tounges are not designed to take that much pressure. Really look at the tounge of the product you are using. Do you think it could take that kind of strain and flex?

I doubt it's going to work with or without the carpet. If the floor is that uneven, then most likely it's going to cause a lip where one laminate board is higher or lower than the others. I installed laminate in a mobile home and even though the sub-floor looked fairly level, one board sticks up about 1/16th of an inch higher than the rest. That was a pretty good floor, on yours you might not be able to walk across it without tripping. I'd suggest you go back with a good carpet and the thickest padding you can get.

Laminate flooring underlayments serve three main functions: protecting the laminate from water damage, acoustical dampening and stability.

I would be concerned over moisture (mold) as carpet is absorbent and laminate flooring is not....your laminate flooring underlayment will waterproof and prevent mold. With a little time and furniture placement and just normal use, the laminate will come apart at the joints (buckle, if you will). You are better off to wait until you do another job in which you have leftover underlayment, spend the time, take up the carpet and do it right. If not, you'll probably waste your laminate flooring and be very unhappy with your results after a short time.

Long nails can be harbingers for bacteria, specifically if they are artificial, but they are good for scratching and opening those little foil wrapped containers which are so hard to get into.

I prefer girls who have a natural look... sure makeup as well as other things are good, but whenever it is used to enhance your own natural look.

No you should not lay laminate ontop of carpet.

The floor can be leveled with hardboard, it costs around £3-£5 a sheet and they are 1.5m x 50 cm. this will level the floorboards cheaply, you lay the hardboard ontop of the existing un-even floor boards. Use a Stanley knife to cut the board(watch out for cutting along with a blunt blade, easy to slip and cut yourself, and don't cut towards yourself), or you could use a jigsaw.

Nail the boards down with Ring shank nails, (do not use screws or larger headed nails) Ring shanks are just the right size.

Laminate needs a firm flat surface underneath. Its better to do it properly with the correct laminate underlay than to take short cuts and pay out more money to put it right.

Personally I wouldn't lay it onto of carpet. I would take it up and start fresh. Much better and cleaner :)

Although, a bit more work of course.
