A few girls have told me this. Usually the ones I don't intend to date say it when they try to ask me out, so for me, it's kind of a red flag. What does it mean to them though?

More importantly, what should I say to them, since when they say it, I generally do not feel safe.

I can't speak for anyone else, but from me it was a compliment. It meant the guy was a winner, someone I could trust. He was someone I found attractive, but whom I didn't just worry he would jump my bones the first time I relaxed in his presence.

I had reasons to fear guys that I won't go into, you can guess. Unfortunately, what was a compliment from me didn't seem to be one for them when they heard it. Some of them seemed to think it meant I thought they were like friends not dates. Communication is just so darn hard!!!!

What did you mean when you said they said it and you do not feel safe? I don't get it?

It is meant to be a compliment no matter who it comes from as long as they are sincere. It means they trust you and feel like they can depend on you. The problem is who this remark comes from apparently that makes it a "red flag"... If coming from someone you are not interested in - I would simply thank them for the compliment and tell them that you are glad to be friends with them, but you aren't looking for anything else. That way it is just enough of a blow off - but still not rude. Best of luck.

It's not a red flag for anything.

They just are saying that you are like a protector to them, and that makes them feel safe. It's a compliment, not a come on.

So take it for what it is, and boost your ego just a little bit, because you seem to have a way of making girls feel safe. That is not something all guys can say about themselves.

......When they say that, then you can ask "How come?" or you can just say "That's a good thing, if you ever don't feel safe let me know."

I mean you don't have to drill her with questions pertaining to why she made that comment, just keep it short and simple and easy to answer.

Well that means you are sweet, kind and a typical gentleman thats why girls feel safe around you and they also tell you that. Well you should be happy about that. Well you should ask them to be more clear in what they want to say to you. This may just their way of trying to impress you, so dude just relax and enjoy the appreciation!

double edged sword here - on one hand it means you are a good long term partner that she will always want around. on the other hand she's saying you couldn't hurt my feelings with a baseball bat. NOT a compliment.

You're a sane, kind person. This is generally how I interpret it.
