There is a pill, cant recall the name, but you get it at the vet for about $3, and it kills all of the fleas within 24 hours. Then you give it Frontline (or similar product) on the back of the neck (you also get that from the vet), which is supposed to last a month, but I find lasts about 2 weeks. Thats about all you have to, or can do.
It is VITAL that you get treatment right away, as a severe flea infestation can cause anemia, and kill them (no joke, ive seen feral kittens who died from it). Besides, a new cat always has to be taken to the vet for a checkup and shots as soon as you get them from anywhere but a shelter, for the cat's health, and your own.
As for you and your home, youre probably going to have to do some "flea bombs", available at grocery and discount stores, which will kill them all (usually), but youll have to leave the house (with the cat) for at least 12 hours to be safe from its toxins. If you live in the north, you are seriously lucky, as "flea season" is just about over - though they will stay on the cat without treatment - and in the winter they are fairly scarce in the home. They loooove to hang out in your carpet and furniture and bite your ankles, so dont forgo the flea bomb! Small price to pay for a new purrfectly loving companion for 10+ years I think :)
*EDIT AFTER ADDITIONAL INFO: Frontline & Advantage are available worldwide, and as for dealing with the kitty tomorrow, go to your local pet store and get some flea powder. It smells horrible and is no joy to do, but from how many fleas it sounds like kitty has, treatment of any kind is pretty important ASAP (btw, you probably saved its life by adopting it and caring for it). I wouldnt really advise giving it a flea shampoo bath, as handling a furry blender of teeth and claws is never a good Sunday, and it especially won't be pretty if the cat doesnt know you (been there, done that, ended up bandaged from wrist to elbow...). If absolutely all shops are closed, there isn't much you can do, but grin and bear it till Monday, and kitty will love you forever if you help her scratch the itches - ahhh, good bonding :)

flea collars do not work, neither do those flea medications that you find in the grocery store (like hartz) and flea baths are liable to scare the poor thing senseless, especially if you just got it. go to a veterinarian or a pet supply place and get frontline or advantage. you just rub it in to their fur right in between their shoulders and the fleas will be dead and gone in about 24- 48 hours.
yes fleas can bite humans and infest human houses, but they do not live on humans
If you just got this cat from a barnyard then it is best to take it to the vet for a check anyways. just to make sure it is not sick before you treat it with anything. the cat will probably need to be wormed and you really should get shots for it to guard against rabies, feline distemper and the like. There are other test which should be done (like checking for feline leukemia) but the other stuff should be at the top of the list right now.
One thing I would like to add is to PLEASE have your cat spayed or neutered. PLEASE do not let it breed. I don't know where you are but I am just beside myself thinking that you actually bought a cat. Where I live, people are always letting their cats breed and then dumping the kittens off in my neighborhood, sometimes they dump grown cats as well There are too many unwanted kittens and pups in the world and not enough homes for them, they can end up mutilated, maimed, poisoned or even killed at a shelter- so please have your pet spayed or neutered

Yes, they will bite people and infect your home. Just give it a flea bath (especially for cats) and call your local vet to see what product they have. Maybe Frontline or something like that. Probably 10-20 bucks for a dose that will work for a month or so. Fleas should die out in the winter.

flees = runs away or fleas = bugs? IF YOUR HOUSE / cat HAS FLEAS…. I have a NATURAL remedy for getting rid of fleas in your house. Go to the Store and buy some 20 Mule Team BORAX. (you find it in the soap isle) Then sprinkle it all over. Carpets, couch, bedding, pillows, PET BEDs, car, even wood floors. (NOT ON YOUR PET!) THEN VACCUME IT UP. What Boax does is coats the eggs ... The eggs hatch deformed or unable to reproduce. You will have to do this 2 or 3x about a week apart in order to get all the egg cycles. FOR YOUR PET. Use the topical flea killer that is on the market or wash with Dawn dish washing soap (make sure to rinse all soap out) and use a flea comb (this is also a head lice comb) especially for kittens or puppies who are too young to have insecticide put on them. Kill the fleas that you find on the comb with soap or alcohol

oh i feel your pain when i first got my kitty he had fleas to yes they WILL bite humans so watch your ankles because they normally bite there! Ask your vet about a pill or a solution applied to the back of the neck to kill them. Until then get soapy water and a flea comb and start brushing them out. Just brush then shake it off in the soapy water. Oh and they will go onto the area around you so remove all the things he has been on and vacuum the rugs

As well as the usual flea treatments you can also dab a little tee tree oil on the cats collar. but it's more a preventative thing than how to get rid of them. Fleas do bite humans but can't live off our blood.

Use Advantedge, or Frontline of one of those monthly flea treatments. It's a cream you just put on the back of the neck and the cat feels relief for the fleas in 20 minute flat! Then you do it once a month ever more.

Go to your nearest pet store IMMEDIATELY and purchase a product called FrontLine, for cats. If you can't find it ask someone, because they will have it and it absolutely works. The fleas will be dead.
Yes, they can go to humans (and carpets, and rugs, and other things), but it's not as easy for them there as it is on cats and dogs. If you can keep them off your cat, you can be free of fleas.
