Yes, religion can be dehumanizing. On the other hand, some religions really are humanizing, including Buddhism, Hinduism, Bahai, Ethical Culture, Unitarian Universalism, and the more moderate congregations of Christianity, Judaism and Islam. But I would agree that there are religious beliefs, especially fundamentalism (in any of the monotheistic religions) which are very dehumanizing.
That's one of the main reasons atheists and humanists and skeptics keep coming back here. We hope to draw out some of the more reasonable humanity in people who do not trust each other, and thus be an instrument of peace.

When we look at the origins of the catholic church... we have to note that it murdered all opposers and challengers of it.. Through war and murder... and when the christians began to have power... they also did the same thing till every natural civilization on earth not (catholic or christian as they behave most similarly today) was destroyed... We were so imbedded by this religious theology or approach that when cultures began to try to recover they all started coming out religious... so today that what is natural gets challenged... until it justifies it's "religion" We got this way first through fear, then through ignorance, ... As we try to move from religion the christians become loud, and drown out the validity of arguments against it... not for centuries has a human being been born on this earth without an agressive catholic/christian/religious presence waiting to consume it. Out in the open many profess to be peaceful...but just try explaining something to one that brings evidence against their beleifs and see how fast they turn violent, loud. or agressive. They claim blind faith... but in the end they work hard at just staying blind and keeping the rest of us as ignorant as they have become comfortable in being.

I agree with you. I do not understand why people of every religion would discriminate other people for not believing in their religion. I believe there are different religions out there because each religion is suited to that person. I am Catholic and I would rather be friends with someone who is Jewish or Muslim, etc then with another who is Catholic but discriminates someone from another religion.

In times of conflict, people tend to polarize. In times of religious conflict, the polarization is even more intense. When the conflicts are over, unfortunately the polarization tends to stick around...or even become entrenched.
Witness Catholic vs. Protestant, Sunni vs. Shia, Islam vs. Judaism. Provincialism and hatred of the "others" are now part and parcel of being part of any of these groups.
