We got him from the pound and the vet has never been able to tell us what he is.

OMG he's adorable.
My first instinct is a shepherd mix, but at the same time, I seen a pure bred dog like this.
German Shepherd/Belgian Shepherd dog perhaps?

Let me just say Adorable!! If the vet couldnt tell you what he is then that gives the clue that he is a mutt. He looks like a terrier mix of some kind, maybe some chow in him. He has the build and ears as a Terrier but the coloring of a Chow. Just remember mutts need lovin' too! Good Luck with your new family member!

He is gorgeous. He isn't even remotely related to a German Shepherd. And certainly not a Chow either. I know the name of the breed and I cannot think of it. I saw one at the vet's office.
This bothers me so much that I am going to go look this breed up if I can and come back to your question. I have never done this before. But, if I don't do it, I will be awake all night thinking of YOUR dog.........I SHALL RETURN AND YOUR VET SHOULD KNOW THIS BREED THAT I AM TALKING ABOUT.
Took me half an hour, but I am back. I see someone said Terrier mix. NO terrier in him either. I think he is a Pharaoh Hound. I cannot locate the breed I really wanted that starts with a U. Look up the Pharaoh Hound and see what you think. He is something special, not just a mixed mutt. I know he is a pure bred.

It looks like you have an absolutely beautiful mutt on your hands! He's got the muscling of a pitt but the face and ears of a shepherd. He's cute!!!
Edit, sorry katetrinity but that is no pharaoh hound, not even close. He's much stockier, he doesn't have the face and the only thing that even remotely looks like he is would be the ears.
And by the way...a dog doesn't have to be a purebred to be special! Mutts are typically happier, healthier animals! It's Hybrid vigor in action. Purebreeding actually goes against everything genetics could teach us!

A mix and a mutt are the same thing. I would guess either of those words. He is very sweet looking!

Looks like German Shepard to me ... probably a mix, but I couldn't even try to guess what it could be! Doesn't really matter. I have a mixed-breed, and I speculate every day on what she might be. And I still don't know! Good Luck, and enjoy your dog!

My guess would be a pure blend! lol He is cute and yours. I have a feeling quite a few breeds went into the making of his litter, but I bet you he will live a long healthy life!

I see a bit of Belgian malinois,but there's something else,too.He could have several breeds in him.He's a very neat - looking dog.
