My dog is about 2 years old, about 35-45 lbs. He is laying down and he won't get up. I tried to give him a treat, but he just took it in his mouth and didn't swallow it or even chew it. His breathing sees to be shallow. He ate this morning, but now he's just listless. He's not dehydrated as far as i can tell. He has a lot of fleas, which we're trying to get rid of, but other than that he's pretty healthy. I know I probably need to take him to the vet, but I can't really afford it right now (yeah, I know, I'm a horrible person) and the only pet emergency center here has to have all the money up front. What could be wrong with him? thanks in advance

I hope you found the answers that you needed. Unfortunately, I don't have any for you either. I just wanted to say that just because you don't have the money to take your pet to the vet DOES NOT make you a bad pet parent. Don't let some of these people "shoot you down" when you are asking for help. Things happen. I have had them happen to me. I hope your dog is okay. Hang in there!

Here is the problem, first you ask a question that is so vague that we could not even begin to tell you if it is fatal and needs an emergency vet, i.e., when the last time he ate, is he drinking, fever, any major changes in the dogs, life, has he been around cleaning chemicals, is he throwing up things of that nature. Second, even if we could give you some ideal what is going on you said, "i dont want to take him to the vet right away cuz its REALLY EXPENSIVE". Do you think any of us WANT to spend our hard earned money at the vet? No but is what a responsible dog owner does or they simple do not own a dog. So even if we could help you "don't" want to really help your dog anyway. Hope we all answered "FAST"!!!

So let me get this straight - you know the dog needs to go to the vet, you know it's horrible not to, but you're still not prepared to go? What the hell is wrong with you, are you prepared for this dog to die?

Did you also know that it isn't possible to diagnose a problem over the internet? Even a vet couldn't do this - and if they could, where are you planning to get treatments from, thin air?? You've described only symptoms of basic illness.

Get your act together and take the dog to a vet. You've got a computer and the internet, so don't even try saying you've got no money. Unacceptable.

Get your dog to the vet. Make payment arrangements, borrow the money whatever. I had to make payment arrangements once because my dog needed emergency surgery and I had just mailed out all of my bills so I was short on money. It happens. My vet let me pay 1/2 upfront and 1/2 the next month. I'd bet that yours will too. Most vets are compassionate or at least they understand competition in business and won't want to lose you as a customer.

Might be a reaction to the flea medication you are using, or a million other things. If you want to know for sure, see the vet. No one here is a vet.. No matter what they try and tell you

Your dog could have anything wrong with him ranging from flea anemia to pancreatitis. You're never going to get the answers you want without taking him to the vet. Try to borrow the money if you can, but your dog needs help right now. Try asking them about Care Credit...they will explain what it is to you if you have it in your area.

I hate to have to tell you this, but that is way to broad of a description for anyone to really know what is wrong. A couple things you can do are... take his temp! another thing you should do is look at his gums. Lift up his lips. Look at the color. They should be nice and pink. Press your finger on his gums to see how long it takes them to go from white to pink again. Call the E-vet and ask them what your dog's temp should be. Good luck! Look into getting a care credit! www.carecredit.com

Put some plain honey on this pets tongue, this will elevate his sugar level and perk it up.This pet could have a number of things wrong, but if it has a lot of fleas this could be draging it down and your pet could be anemic.Fleas also cause worms and your pet could need reworming. It is safe to put the 5% sevin dust on your pet to kill the fleas.

I just recently had a similar incident. My dog had suffered a mild seizure. If so, the dog should come around, but you should really get it to a vet right away.
