You can't. He needs to hit bottom and realize it for himself. Good luck.

you can't make anybody do anything, it is not your place. the person will have to make his own choices, nobody can pronounce you an alcoholic, you have to come to the conclusion yourself. check out an alanon meeting or a co-dependecy group to get help with your issues. people don't become alcoholics, we are born with the gene, it is not like i decided one fine day, it would be a blast to become one of those cool alcoholics myself. it doesn't matter how much or often you drink, what matters is that an alcoholic cannot stop completely. i never hit "rock bottom", it never interfered with my life, work, family, relationships, money, etc. i never had more than 2 drinks, every once in a while - no blacking out, no binge drinking, no DWI, nothing. i simply couldn't stop drinking completely, when i tried. the point is, there are heavy drinkers, that are not alcoholics, just as there are alcoholics, that really don't drink a whole lot. so judging your friend won't help you or him, and nagging to get him to see your side will likely put a strain on your relationship. simply and calmly state your concerns to him , and leave it at that. go on with your own life, concentrating on your own wellbeing. good luck !

I just spent several days observing group sessions at a rehabilitation clinic here in Jacksonville, FL. Many of the men and women there were in voluntary rehab for alcohol and then were required to join AA.

Most of them were there because they realized that they were causing pain for their family members. Often an alcoholic doesn't want to help themselves... they decide to change because they want to stop hurting the ones they love. This is the reason that my father, who was an alcoholic for many years, finally stopped drinking.

Alcoholism has been determined to be a disease just like any other... There are marked differences in the brains of those who become alcoholics from those of people who can control how much they drink. They sign of an alcoholic is they they can not drink in moderation. They almost always drink to excess.

You should talk to him... sincerely and truley about how he is hurting you... that is your leverage. Try to get him to go to AA (after you make him realize that it's that important to you).

Good luck.

you can't "make" an alcoholic do anything; in fact, trying to "make" an alcholic do anything just makes them drink more; alcholism is a disease; it is a chemical imbalance in that person and it is genetic. the person has to sink to the lowest rung on the evolutionary ladder and wake up drunk in the gutter before they decide to do something about it; either that or kill someone while driving to the next bar and then they are forced to confront their disease, while sitting ina prison cell for 25 years

you could try taping the jerk; or videotaping him unawares and then when he is sober show him what a jerk he is making of himself. alcoholics are always jerks in one way or another
no one wants to be around an alky except other alkies

good luck

You don't. Believe me... I have an alcoholic father and an alcoholic ex-husband... and I couldn't save either of them. Run away before they ruin your life, like they did mine.

Kerry is right. If we had the answers to your questions there wouldn't be so many alcoholics.

You can't. If they are a family member you need to go to alanon and get some new perspectives on it.
