I am making a clear distinguishment between BELIEVING a god exists and WANTING one to exist. I simply DON'T want a God to exist, I believe it makes everything much more simple. I am not sure I want to be a robot and eternally worship a god who I don't know exists. Heck, I am not even sure I share his values. I don't think it's cool to send bears to kill children for laughing at a prophet, or to kill people for violating the sabbath.

Anyway, I don't see what I would be doing for "all eternity."

What do you you think?

Not cool! Simply not believing doesn't make it so.
I wish people would quit quoting the worst of the "Old Testament."
You know full well that we live under the laws of Modern Day...........Children are not killed by bears for laughing a prophets! And you also know that people are not put to death for violating the sabbath! For crying out loud, that was the Laws of the Land thousands of years ago.

Been there, done that. I think not wanting God to exist is not a reaction towards God himself but the idea or a picture of a God that has been presented to you. As a teenager I have rejected the concept of a God not because I don't believe in him--in times of trouble I would often unconsciously say, "Oh my God" or "Thank God"--but because I rejected some of the religious ideas and doctrines which are part of my strict Catholic upbringing. I was raised in a community and a Church that have Bible literalists. Bible literalists are people who take everything in the Bible literally--such as God sending bears to kill children for laughing at a prophet or killing people for violating the Sabbath. But eventually when I matured I began to realize that the Bible should not be taken literally and people who do should be taken with a grain of salt. Now I know better.

Yeah, right! It's your thing! Do what you wanna do! Feel carefree, and set your own values! Don't worry about a thing! I would never put a guilt trip on you. The choice is entirely yours. If you think it's cool then believe what you want. You have free will.
I know that after Jesus came and was made a sacrifice and died he took away all of those "Old Laws." People are not sent for violating the sabbath! Children are not killed for laughing at a prophet, Not in our Country anyway. Not in this lifetime. That was under 'Old Hebrew Law."
However, the choice is yours. Jesus could come this morning. If you choose not to believe that's cool.............But there is a chance that you could be in for a rude awaking. What if you are wrong?
I want you to choose God. I want you to choose Heaven. Why? Because I want everyone to know the joy and happiness that I know.

Hello dosahyd f,

I think you have every right to believe what you will. I think it is very hard to find faith in a God or some other-worldly entity when we look at the world around us. We see such a diversity of different faiths, of which, don't agree with each other on many issues and on top of that, a lot of religious people, clearly are irrational (there are a few notable exceptions).

Personally, I cannot "prove" God exists, but I would caution you that I would not doubt in a God simply because it is convenient to do so. Live your life as you will, but remember, just because you can't see something, doesn't mean it doesn't exist (many people thought some scientists were crazy when they speculated on the existence of atoms). I would also say that just because a good chunk of the observable world may or may not have a logical reason for their belief in God, does not mean that defines God for what God is.

One final thing I will say is this:

I have always told people that if there is no God, afterlife or whatever...you might as well shoot yourself (well, no sane person would do that of course). My thoughts are, if you have say 30, 50, 70 years left to live, what good is it if you spend an eternity as nothing? The fact is, you have some means to acknowledge your existence, to realize you have a perception of space-time and individuality. It is hard to imagine that our brains have built in evolutionary mechanisms for the acknowledgment of self-existence. That does say a lot but, like I said, it cannot empirically "prove" the existence of God.

Don't mean to be preachy, not trying to convince you otherwise. Just saying, sometimes we cannot let the world around us define the world around us with complete certainty. =) Enjoy your life!

I think you are doing what many people that are intellectual do.You are debating and analyzing the issue of God. So write down all the reasons to believe and the benefits.
Then write down all the reasons you should not believe and the benefits. Maybe that will help you decide. If someone tells you it is cool not to believe in God, they are not cool.
The Bible will tell you, you are a fool not to believe.
Don't listen to that. Go some place nice and quiet and alone with no distractions. Sit and listen with your eyes closed. Listen to the voices inside you. Then just think about it and listen some more. The ones that tell you God is not real are the ones that don't want you to believe. The ones that tell you he is real when you open your eyes and look about, when you open your eyes, ask yourself who created everything you see.
Who are you and where did you come from. You are certainly not your body. You use it to get yourself to your quiet place but who are you really, who is it you call me. Don't trash yourself for questioning. Pursue your doubt. Search for God. Don't just take the easy way and say there is no God. That is a cop out. You will have those who want you to believe as they do. But when it comes down to it, it is a 50/50 chance that their is God. Hope this helps. If all else fails, remember that God is Spirit and God is Love. It is possible he is there.

Sure, you're allowed to want it, but NOT wanting a God doesn't make it so just as much as wanting one doesn't. I don't want a lot of things to exist, like poverty, but they do; and there are some things that I would like to exist that simply don't.

It seems to me like the choice has to be between belief, not desire. Don't listen to people who tell you to believe one thing or the other, and shame on the people who tell you you'll be burning for all eternity. It's a conclusion that has to be reached through personal discovery. I think that's the only way to be truly satisfied.

If you're interested, I started questioning God's existence when I was pretty young, and eventually came to the conclusion that he doesn't exist. Because I was not told to be an atheist, but instead was able to reach the conclusion by myself and answer many questions for myself, I lead a pretty happy and satisfied life. Good luck!

Have you wondered why you might think it’s cool for God not to exist? What better things would be available to you if He did not exist? Could there be better things without God in the picture? Do you perhaps desire to rid of certain boundaries because they grate on the conscience?

But if boundaries did not exist, and everyone was free to live as they pleased, could this place be a better place to live? Or would it be a completely and hopelessly evil place for anyone to last but a few years? Have you considered that it may be God who is holding us back from completely destroying ourselves and each other?

What if you really found out that God is a GOOD God?

God does not send bears to kill children, children who are not mature take chances with bears and get killed, or parents who should be caring for the children do not take the necessary precautions. God does not kill people for violating the sabbath. .

The bad things that happen to man are the results of mans actions or lack of proper action. God does not do bad things to people. People do bad things to people.

It may be cool for you to not want God to exist, but it won't change anything, and believe me, if you continue to disbelieve in God, one day it will heat up.

If God wanted robots he would have made robots.
We all have free will to do as we please.
There are consequences of course to our actions, but we do have the right to go about our lives as we see fit.

The two examples that you have given are kinda a bit scary.
No wonder you dont want there to be a God if you are basing your outlook on these examples.

God has four cardinal (main, most significant) attributes:

LOVE, JUSTICE, WISDOM & POWER.

The greatest of these is Love. Jesus is the perfect example of God....and he showed love on earth.

Think about the design of your body, the animals and the creations. Think about the emotions and abilities you have.
You were made in God's image.

God is a just God. His justice is perfect.

You need to dig deeper in the scriptures that show the whole qualities of God. And come to a better understanding of him.

Pray to him for light to be shed on how you feel about those scriptures. Those asking shall receive. But ask with an open receptive heart. And he will send someone to you to help you. Wait and watch for them.

Did you mean "is it cool" as in "is it ok with you"?
If so, then sure, whatever you want to want is fine by me. I can understand not wanting God to exist as well as I can wanting one to exist. Both positions have their up sides, and you mention some good ones. I, too, would hate to spend my life in subordination to a mere idea, and I also disagree with many of the "values" proposed by religious texts. Sending bears to kill anyone is pretty sadistic and so too is killing people for "violating the sabbath" (what does that even mean? And why would God care?). I certainly don't want THAT God to exist. It's a pleasant convenience, then, that I don't believe in him (or her, or it, or whatever).

Or did you mean "is it cool" as in "is it generally considered "cool" by "cool" people"? In that case, I can't help you. You'll have to ask them.
