Probably Minnesota. So many lakes.
Or Alaska. So pristene. So unexplored.

MN does have some good fishing but lacks any Ocean or saltwater flats fishing.

Best "overall" fishing?

Would have to be one of these FLA, TX, LA, GA, CA, AL. (I would include Alaska but it has a limited amount of saltwater species you can fish for. Great place though!!)

Minnesota is fun, but you can't catch a 30 LB Mahi,15 LB Redfish, 8 LB Seatrout, or 15 LB Largemouth Bass there. If you voted for MN or any landlocked northern state your omitting a whole genre of fishing!

The question was: What state has the best fishing?
Not: What state has the best freshwater lakes for Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, Northerns, Musky, Trout, Etc.?

As much as I like MN it cannot come close.

Having fished all over the US I would have to say California is tops in terms of places to go and variety of fish available, both fresh and saltwater. Although there are some seasonal closures and restrictions in some areas there is always some kind of fishing year round within a short distance.

I'd have to say California. It's got something like 800 miles of coastline, with saltwater fish ranging from cold water salmon, halibut, and rockfish, to subtropical yellowtail, tuna, marlin, dorado (mahi-mahi). For freshwater there are the world-class bass lakes in the lowlands up to the Sierra Nevada trout streams.

It seems that the other states listed by the other responders (Florida and Texas) are missing the trout and salmon, while Alaska lacks the bass and tuna (though it's far better than California for salmon and the other cold water fish).

Depends on the spices of fish you are wanting to catch.
And one you can fish all year round in my book.
Witch to me would mean any of the gulf cost states.
As Johnny stated and the list he made are great states, only one I have a problem with is CA (grew up in that state) way to crowed and to many people.

Minnesota is the land of ten thousand lakes. So I would have to say Minnesota is the best state. I know many people fish Minnesota for Walleye and pan fish. Yes and northrens.

Minnesota might have ten thousand lakes, but Michigan has over eleven thousand. But in the end, it depends on your tackle, bait, methods, and what you're fishing for.
