I went into the mall in my hometown today, and was stopped by a cop who made me leave. Apparently we are not allowed in the mall after six unless we are over the age of 19 or are accompanied by a parent. I am 18, and old enough to buy tobacco, buy a lottery ticket, own my own car, own a house, get something pierced, get a tattoo, and vote. But I am not allowed into the mall after six. I am just curious, would this ludicris rule infringe upon my constitutional rights?

My town has no curfew laws. They have inforced a policy at the mall where we are not allowed in the mall after six unless we are 19 or older or are accompanied by a parent. It used to be that you couldnt be in the mall after 6 if you were 17 or younger.

to badbender001 I can not just stop shopping at that mall. It is the only mall in my town. The next closest mall is over an hour away, and with gas prices the way they are, I cant afford to drive that far to go shopping.

A private business is entitled to set its own rules, but I agree - that rule is outrageous.

Were you stopped by an actual Police Officer or just Mall security? Since mall property is privately owned property they can make what ever rules they want. The mall in my home town made a rule that those 17 and under were not allowed with out parents and they saw their business drop by 70% so they quickly changed that rule. The mall where you live might be trying to lower the crime rate and they over reacted. if I were you, I would never shop at that mall again to show them they can not treat honest adult customers that way.

Many counties and cities have passed ordinances placing age restrictions on those who are allowed to be in malls, walking the streets, parks, etc. after a certain hour without their parent/guardian.

Consult an attorney if you believe your "constitutional rights" have been infringed upon. You may be just the person an attorney, or Civil Liberties organization, is looking for to establish a precedent in your city.

You'll probably understand the law once you're older. They are allowed to do that if it is a law and I can't imagine a cop wasting their time in the local mall if they weren't there to enforce the law; there are a lot more important things to take care in comparison. I'd research the curfew law in your hometown. There is a similar law here in my hometown.

Umm that's messed up. I'd talk to an authority about it because if it IS a law it needs to be changed.

I mean I go to the mall unaccompanied by parents all the time and I've only just turned 16. I don't think that cop was telling the truth, or maybe it's a weird rule that only the mall you went to has.

Alot of malls have a rule that does not allow minors to be there without a parent after a certain hour. It seems a little ridiculous that they would make you leave, since you're 18.

Their mall, their rules.
Too bad that you can't 'vote with your feet' and shop elsewhere...next time get there earlier or hook up with
a granny and claim her as your relative.

You might mention this to the individual stores in the mall-
''I tried to shop at YOUR store last night but the security man said I had to leave. Sorry about your lost sale."

Your legally an adult in the united states get in touch with a lawyer. While they have a right to say who they want in their store they cant turn you away once your an adult just cause of your age. Discrimination at its best.

Sounds pretty ridiculous to me, but I guess it would depend on the Mall itself and the fact that NOBODY has challenged it......

I'd kick you out of MY mall. I hate people, though.
