He's insanely amusing to read now.
He and Mathers were bonkers drug fiends but Crowley was by far the better educated.
Crowley makes simple things complicated and was a nutty ego tripper. His translation of the Tao ti Ching is over poetic.
He is undoubtably an extaordinarily interesting character in the history of modern occult practice. For me though, Idris Shah wrote the best books on the occult.

I think of Ozzy Osbourne... the song Mr. Crowley... and Black Sabbath... and that brings back High School memories... some good and some bad.
At times, I still enjoy listening to Ozzy's music and that is as much I know about Mr. Crowley himself, so I can honestly say, I don't admire him because I know too little about him.

Back in the day (70's for me), people like Alister Crowley held a hypnotic sway over the minds of many until they realized what a scam-artist he was. Led Zeppelin's "Battle of Evermore" took his place, especially when I availed myself of the pleasures of herb and home-made blackberry wine (which, by the way, I no longer use either).

I do have a book called "The Magic of Thelema", A Handbook of the Rituals of Aleister Crowley. Also a biography of him. Coyotes like all misunderstood creatures.

I don't think much of Crowley as a person, but there are certainly aspects of Thelemic practice that I find comprehensible and even admirable.
