Hello I am The owner of Dog Training in Arizona a memeber of IACP, a graduate from a Nationally accredated school, and a helper at a vet clinic in Airzona.

The Vet I help tells people that it is ok to feed there dog yogurt in moderation. No more then 1 tablespoons per day for that size dog. Vanilla yogurt is the best I use it in my dogs food at night there is actually a food on the market that acutally contains yogurt in it. It is made by Science Diet... Yogurt helps with dogs digestion tracks. HOWEVER your best bet is to keep the yogurt low fat if it is an older dog or a less active dog. However if your dog is very active then you can go either way.

Actually yogurt is good for dogs, it helps build their immune system. I give my dogs yogurt everyday. I buy the, Yo Baby organic yogurt with DHA, the DHA is fish oil which is also good for their skin. It has 6 live active cultures and is sweetened with organic sugar. Most Walmarts I have been in carry it, it comes in a 6 pack. I also found this article:

Yogurt with Probiotics for Gas, Vomiting and Gastric Distress in Dogs

8/9/2006: Amy from Odenville, AL writes, "My dog was having stomach problems; gas, weight loss, eating grass and vomiting. After about a week, we had blood tests and a complete exam with the vet, who could not say what was wrong. No parasites or worms, no organ problems. At wit's end, I thought about probiotics and yogurt helping people's stomachs. I checked, and yogurt is safe to feed dogs. My dog eats at least 4 tablespoons of yogurt per day and has not had any more problems; even his weight is back to normal. It is his favorite "treat" and my other dogs get it every day too!"

Also, you can mix the yogurt with all natural or organic peanut butter put it in the kong and freeze it. For an awesome treat.

Plain yogurt is preferred, and in small amounts. It is usually recommended after a dog has been treated with antibiotics since it kills the good bacteria and well as the bad. The plain yogurt helps replace the good bacteria.

A typical diet for a dog that has been recovering from illness is boiled chicken, rice and low-fat cottage cheese. Whole milk (milk in general) is bad for dogs and cats for that matter. Milk products vary, I know a lot of agility people that like to use string cheese as a reinforcement, but the sliced sandwich cheese can cause upset. I think it is the fat content, sugars, and additives in certain milk products (such as ice cream) that can cause upset.

Everything in moderation, instead of using all yogurt in the Kong I would use all natural peanut butter or the canned filling Kong offers. One client I know mixed low fat chicken broth with water, put in tiny bits of chicken, a dog biscuit, and other goodies together and frozen them in a Kong (not sure how she plugged up the small end) but the dogs loved it (although I would recommend this one during the summer and outside).

When in doubt, always check with your vet about dietary items. There are some great books on natural diets for dogs and cats on dogwise.com one good one is by Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health For Dogs and Cats 3rd Edition. All the best.

I can't imagine where you got the idea to give your Yorkie pup fruit loops for low blood sugar... It's really important that you do your research on these small breed dogs as you can end up with some pretty huge vet bills playing things by ear. Low blood sugar is called hypoglycemia and you can avoid it by making sure that your puppy has several small meals per day. Other things that can cause low blood pressure are stress, cold, malnutrition and intestinal parasites. If you notice that your pup is lethargic or weak and appears ill, that may be due to low blood sugar and you want to have something on hand like Karo syrup that you can rub on the gums. Low blood sugar is serious and can kill your pup. Make sure to see a qualified vet to determine the cause of the condition if it ever happens. If the breeder already has the pup on Beniful, you should keep the dog on this product while you switch over to something else so as to avoid tummy upset and diarrhea. Diarrhea is a huge problem with small pups as they can dehydrate fast and you want to avoid that. There are plenty of good, premium, human grade dog foods out there. It's good to avoid foods that have grains due to potential allergy problems. You might want to try a EVO made by Natura to keep your pup healthy. Most dogs love the taste as it's very high protein with no grains at all. Good luck with your pup and do your research and become an expert so that you can give it the best life possible and pass on your good knowledge!

Most dogs can tolerate yogurt well, and some cannot. Yogurt has very low amounts of lactose tho compared to other dairy products, so its not likely your dog will have a problem with it.

I'd opt for just plain yogurt instead of flavored. Most flavored yogurts have sugar or sweeteners in them. Some artificial sweeteners are toxic to dogs.

You can put it in a kong.. freezing makes it last longer. For fun, you can layer different goodies in the kong too, to make it interesting for your dog.. you can use peanut butter, plain yogurt, canned dog food, kibble, treats, etc.. and I'd stick a "teaser" treat out of the very end to get your pup started on it.

Yes, yogurt is very good for dogs. It contains probiotics which are very beneficial to dogs health. You should probably freeze the yogurt if you are going to put it in the kong, otherwise I think you could have a mess on your hands.

Plain yogurt is definetly a better choice, as sugar is not good for dogs, but a little won't hurt him/her. In the future, you should buy plain, though. And any brand will do!

Good luck!

Yogurt is fine for dogs. You just don't want to give them too much( of anything for that matter). My dogs get a spoonful of fat free ( French Vanilla) yogurt most everyday in there food. I have always given my dogs yogurt as well as cottage cheese. Take care....All the best;~)

A small amount of any dairy product is fine for most dogs. Won't cause the runs in small amounts. And I agree with the other responders that too much sugar is just as bad for dogs as it is for people.

Dogs do not care what brand you serve.

A better thing to put inside a Kong is small pieces of Roll-Over, or Cheez Whiz, or a bit of peanut butter. Even bits of your dog's normal food willl be enticing enough.
