I have had it for at least 9 years and I have talked to other people who have the same problem.

The sunscreen answer was correct (and important to remember.) But also, the (especially red) dye they used to use caused allergies in a lot of people. (Probably not the majority of people but still, a pretty big percentage.) You can tell because people will come in with a older tattoo that has several colors and only the red portion gets puffy. (Don't know why it happens periodically - maybe as you shed skin cells, ink gets into different areas that it hasn't been before...)

I'm not sure why it does this but I have a tattoo of Eeyore on my ankle and he has a yellow halo and this is area that swells on me... maybe that poster above my answer has something there with the whole maybe an allergy to yellow dye thing. Could it be you have yellow in yours? I have had Eeyore for 6 years now.... so maybe it's allergic reaction?

A friend of mine has the same problem. He was told by his doc the color yellow and red dye - he has a slight allergy to those dyes.
(That is where he swells up the most).

If you gently run your finger over it, all tattoos are slightly raised.

A tattoo is a scar. It was poked and rubbed over by a needle, it scabbed and healed. Colorful scar tissue is all it is.

our tattoo artist told me and my fiance when we got our tattoos that they are extremely sensitive to sunlightso they are much more prone to getting skin cancer. he said the other day when we asked about it. he said just to make sure you get some sunscreen (spf40 or higher) and rub it in before exposing it to the sun. that should reduce it.
