I would like to do a fresh install of XP on my desktop and laptop. Do I need to buy two separate copies to do that? If you only can use it on one computer can it be used again if you ever want to format that computer's hard drive and do a fresh reinstall again? Thanks.

XP 'tracks' the hardware it is installed on, and reports this.

Legally, without a 'group' license, you can only install 1 copy on 1 computer.

Yes, you can later do a reinstall, but you will probably have to go through the activation procedure again. Sometimes this also happens if you change some hardware.

When you buy WinXP, the license is only for one computer. When you instal WinXP, you have to activate it online. This is how Microsoft validates that it is installed only on one computer.

If you have two computers, then you have to buy two copies.

If you want to do a fresh reinstall, you can reinstall Windows, as long as the hardware requirements are exactly the same. When you activate Windows, it also sends your hardware configurations to Microsoft. That is how it determines whether it is the same computer or not. If you happen to swap out a motherboard, then you have to call Microsoft and go through this ugly fiasco.

You can install it on the desktop and activate it, then install it on the lap top and activate it if the activation failed click activate by phone then ask to buy a license to install it and activate it on the lap top this way you don't have to pay full price for an other copy of windows xp you just pay for the the license about $25.00. and yes if you installed on the desktop and formatted the hard drive you can re install it again and again.

No offence, yet are you particular that is unlawful? Many pcs comprise XP professional, and it would not value a lot to get a house replica once you've it at artwork. I paid £17 (about $25) for my completely legal replica. you may quickly discover out if that is unlawful by technique of going to the Microsoft replace website. If it updates ok that isn't any longer unlawful. even if that is illegitimate, pass to start up>administration panel> upload or remove classes and remove those classes particular to XP professional. Re-boot the computing gadget and be conscious in the adventure that they have got lengthy previous. if so, deploy your xp living house, in case you may stay with out powerpoint, outlook, etc. i'd not situation about it being "unlawful". i don't think of you've dedicated any crime. you may want to ignore about professional totally and deploy Open place of work it really is free. BTW in case you do not modify the registry entries it is going to nonetheless arise with XP professional on the welcome exhibit. in my opinion, like another individuals, i might want to go away it. no individual is going to arrest you! regardless of in case you may want to be denying bill Gates nutrition for his toddlers.

As long as it works, there is no reason you can't do it.
