Great Question:
I believe that Jeremiah 29 helps people to realize God's plans for them. Yes I know it was written to the exiled Jews but the lessons in it are timeless. I have boiled the process in my own life down to 4 steps that I call PLAY.

Pray- Truly speaking with God
Listen-Looking for signs, listening to His Spirit
Act- Very important- once you know, you must Act
Yearn-Your whole motive must be to grow closer to God

We need to understand that God's plans won't fail as long as we move forward in obedience. Most of us know what we are supposed to do, we just fail to act. We need to be truly comfortable with God's will EVEN if it is not our own. In my experience it will always be better than our own.

If we have truly submitted our lives to Him, He will place in our hearts the things that we should do. We must pray about what He places in our hearts. We must look and listen to what He is telling us. When we know, we must not be afraid. We must then act. This is a continual process. Throughout this process we must Yearn for God (seek Him with all of our hearts).

In my book: Plans To Prosper You, I discuss these concepts which include: Opened and Closed Doors, The Signs of God, Seeking God with all of your heart, God's timing, the words and history of Jeremiah 29, and how to live out God's plans for your life (to name just a few).

There are two keys for knowing God's will for a given situation (1) Make sure what you are asking for or considering doing is not something the Bible forbids. (2) Make sure what you are asking for or are considering doing will glorify God and help you grow spiritually. If these two things are true and God still is not giving you what you are asking – then it is likely not God’s will for you to have what you are asking for. Or, perhaps you just need to wait a while longer for it. Knowing God’s will is sometimes difficult. People want God to basically tell them what to do – where to work, where to live, who to marry, etc. Romans 12:2 tells us, "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - His good, pleasing and perfect will."

God rarely gives people that direct and specific of information. God allows us to make choices regarding those things. The only decision God does not want us to make is the decision to sin or resist His will. God wants us to make choices that are in agreement with His will. So, how do you know what God’s will is for you? If you are walking closely with the Lord and truly desiring His will for your life – God will place His desires on your heart. The key is wanting God’s will, not your own. “Delight yourself in the LORD and He will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4). If the Bible does not speak against it, and it can genuinely benefit you spiritually - then the Bible gives you the "permission" to make decisions and to follow your heart.

The only plan that God has is to make everything new again. We should be concentrating on having a good relationship with God, by applying Bible principles in our lives and remaining loyal to Him; even while under trial.

In reading the Bible, I discovered that God is sovereign over all events. So I figure everything that has happened in my life was part of God's sovereign will.

You live, read your bible, and pray. God will reveal the rest as you go. Things will happen to make you look back and say "Wow, God has been directing me this whole time."

So basically it's not something to worry about as long as you are seeking Him daily.

I discovered it when everything went wrong and i felt miserable when i tried to follow my own will.

Looking back I can see huge blessings He has given me despite my resistance to follow His way and give Him praise. I cannot even imagine what will be accomplished through my life now that I'm willing to let Him guide my feet.

I just listened to those around me who recognized my potential as a servant of God. This led me to walk through the open doors that happened. I then became a pastor, a teacher, and a missionary.
