The typical view of anti-Catholics is that the church fell into apostasy and the Reformers fixed it.
One problem with this view concerns identifying when the apostasy took place. Some say that it happened in the very first generation of the church after the last apostle died. This doesn't give much credit to Jesus’ and the Holy Spirit's ability to create a church.
Martin Luther indicated that the church got really corrupt about 300 years before his time but that it was somewhat corrupt even before that.
John Foxe in the book "Fox's Book of Martyrs" seems to place the apostasy at the time of the Waldenses at around 1000 A.D.
Some Protestants believe that their denomination is the true New Testament church and that it somehow survived as an underground church from the time of the apostles. Some Baptists think this. This is an absurd claim if you consider the doctrinal teachings of their so-called "true" church (more info).
I suspect that if Martin Luther were alive today that he would agree that his objections to the Roman Church have been fixed within the Catholic Church and its reforms. Yes, there were some abuses in his day but the church was in the process of reform even as he was in the process of founding the Protestant Reformation.
Non-traditional so-called Christian groups such as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Jehovah's Witnesses typically claim that they are the true church which has been founded to "fix" the problems in the apostate church. They are usually founded by a single leader who claims to be a prophet of God and who received a vision from God. Of course, this vision contradicts the established traditional doctrines. Martin Luther seems to me to have something in common with these so-called prophets. He single-handedly derived the "true" doctrines and therefore corrected the so-called "false" doctrines which were then in place. He created a violent rift in the church of his day and had a radical, reactionary, and revolutionary mentally.
In my opinion, it was the Protestant Reformers who established a heretical and schismatic church. The existing Roman Church was in need of reform, but it was still the church that Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit established in the New Testament.
It is refreshing to now believe as a Catholic, that Christ's church has succeeded and that the church didn't fall into total apostasy immediately after the last apostle died. As I study church history in its proper context I am amazed at how God has used His church throughout history in spite of human weaknesses. Catholic theology is absolutely brilliant and her moral statements are incredible. It is easy to be Catholic. It is like coming home.

Yes, I agree. The "man-made" accusation is a hedge; sounds good, but there is quite a lot hiding behind it. If a church exists anywhere that follows what Christ said as recorded in the Gospels, no more and no less, I'd like to see it.
The fact is that just as the Holy Spirit inspired and guided the MEN who wrote the books we now call the Bible, so were MEN (the apostles and their successors) inspired and guided in establishing the Biblically-based doctrines of the Church. I'm not sure who inspired such things as the "altar call" where one "invites Jesus into your heart"; or the truncation of Holy Communion to a symbolic passing around of crackers and grape juice; or a doctrine found nowhere within the pages of the Bible called "scripture alone". As the latter came after 1500 years of Church history, I find it hard to believe that the Holy Spirit changed His mind.

Hi Tebone,
The teaching of the Catholic Church never changes. Every Reformer then and now believes that he is right and all others before him were wrong. You had Lutherans and Calvinists, Baptists and Anabaptists, Episcopalians and Presbyterians, all contending among themselves, each declaring the other in error. In actuality, all were in error to one degree or another.
At first glance, it seems impossible that so many could be in error. How did this happen? The leaders of the Reformation had personal motives for their stand. First, there was wealth to be gained by confiscating Church property. Second, they would gain independence from the Mother Church and its authority. With some temporal princes thus won over, and by making the new religion easy for the people at large, the reformers gradually won over a considerable following. Most importantly, the theology of the Reformers removed the responsibility for sin. They taught that Jesus paid the price for our sins, so we are not to be held accountable. Consult the history of the period, and you will find substantial foundation for this assertion.Henry VIII, King of England, either imprisoned or put to death everyone of importance who did not follow him in his revolt from the Mother Church. Thus the Reformation made its bloody way into Henry’s domains.(3) The Franciscans and Dominicans were ordered to leave England. All the monasteries were looted and the booty went into the royal purse. For those who resisted Henry, there was torture on the rack, burning at the stake and/or the hangman’s noose.Henry’s blind hatred did not end there; he shocked Europe when the relics of Saint Thomas Becket (1118-1170), Archbishop of Canterbury, were destroyed in September 1538, and when he ordered the destruction of nearly all the Catholic shrines in England. With the fury of a madman, Henry VIII created havoc throughout all England.
During the years 1577 and 1603, Good Queen Bess, Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603), had put to death 183 of her Catholic subjects. Of these, 123 were priests, one was a friar not yet ordained and 59 were lay folk, three of them women.(4)
In the beginning, some joined the Protestant movement out of greed, some for power, and some to escape imprisonment and death. Those in control did everything they could to blacken the name of the Church in an attempt to justify their actions. Luther especially, but others followed, who knew the power of the printing press and tens of thousands of pamphlets were distributed debasing and misrepresenting the Catholic Church. After years of hearing and reading lies, the average person no longer knew the truth.
Protestantism has no central authority other than the subjectivity of Scripture. Contrast that with the Catholic Church, which has not changed one article of faith from the day of the Apostles.
They take it for granted that the religion they are born in is true. Their ancestors were robbed of the true faith by violence, flattery, and worldly inducements and history and literature have been perverted to serve the cause of error. But those who sincerely investigate usually come back to the Mother Church, the Church founded by Christ, the Catholic Church.
The Protestants of the first Reformation hated us because they thought we were wrong............
........ those of the new Reformation because they know we are right.
Gospel According to Saint Matthew
Chapter 7
13 Enter ye in at the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many there are who go in thereat. 14 How narrow is the gate, and strait is the way that leadeth to life: and few there are that find it!

I agree. Some of the answers to this question really astound me. People really just believe whatever they're told by their Catholic hating pastors. Please people do your own research and you will find the truth! When the Bible was declared to be the Word of God (By the Catholic Church!) it contained 73 books. The reformers 1200 years later decided to remove 7 books from the old testament. Why? Because the original Word of God supports Catholic doctrine! Luther and others couldn't carry on their charade with these books still there!

You are incorrect. The RCC and the Protestant Church are from the same mold. The RCC will be in fact in the near future, the newly revived Babylon prophesied in the book of Revelation!......“And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet color (official Vatican colors), and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls (the Vatican is filthy rich), having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations (the Holocaust, inquisitions, etc.) and filthiness of her fornication: And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY (very few people realize where the Catholic religion started), BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS (such as all the Protestant denominations) AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH” ―Revelation 17:4,5

Judge not lest you be judged. Only God knows the heart of man let God work in the lives of His believers and don't worry about a different religion than yours. Those that are false will be found out.

Well you say removed seven books from the bible ...hmmm would they happen to be the seven books that were written by Catholic persons and promoted Catholic beliefs.
I mean I can name so many nonbiblical Catholic practices and beliefs that it would make your head spin but all I need to do is mention one.
Catholics believe that whenever there is a conflict between the Bible and Catholic Tradition, Tradition takes precedent.
So in short, man made beliefs of the church always come before biblical beliefs

Not at all. Following the Bible directly by the leading of the Holy Spirit is what Jesus said to do. We're all learning from glory to glory.
At least we're not part of the catholic cult, with its false gospel of works that leads to eternal hell.
