I'm a new christian and trying to learn more about my new faith.
I'm feeling uncomfortable with praying to Jesus because after all the ten commandments say we shouldn't pray to idols or other god's, so i would assume that means only pray to the big guy, so why am I being encouraged to pray to Jesus?

well first of all, you need to know that Jesus is the messiah that the old testament prophesies. He came to earth and grew up as a normal person, and faced all the same temptations of a normal person of that time, but he was PERFECT, completely without sin- because Jesus IS God. They are one and the same. the christian God is a trinity, like light is both a fragment and wave, He is also often compared to an egg (shell, yolk, white), God the father, God the son, and God the spirit. you pray to God as a whole usually, or i do, anyway... many people don't understand it, i don't, no one really does, i don't think... it's just important that you do know that Jesus isn't an idol or just a prophet or something. i highly recomend you read the first 5 books of the new testament. you can find it at www.biblegateway.com if you don't have your own bible.

God bless and good luck!!!

The Old Testament has little or nothing to do with Christianity. The New Testament is about Jesus Christ. According to scripture, you must use Jesus as a Mediator to get to the Father. The Old Testament passed away when Jesus died for our sins on the cross. If you read the 'red letters' in the New Testament, these are the words of Jesus Himself, and Christians should follow in this way. If this is your path, I wish you well. However, I have serious doubts about question in the first place. But then again, that's your business and not mine. Good luck on your spiritual journey.

An idol is more of an image made by man. As a new Christian I recommend read the New Testament first. This is after Christ came. Many things changed when Christ came. Read what Jesus taught, what Jesus said and what Jesus did. Always refer to the love that He showed on the cross. Line up the word and your life with that love and you will never fail.

This is what the Bible says who Jesus is...

COLOSSIANS 1:15-19
15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fullness dwell;

Notice verse 15, Jesus is the Image of the Invisible God, and verse 19 explains it... All of the fullness of the Father exists within Jesus Christ.

When Jesus died on the cross for your sins, it was God himself dieing for you, to show you His love. The bible makes it clear through scripture that God exists in three forms... As the Invisible God the Father, as Jesus Christ, and as the Holy Spirit. All three beings exist as the One God of the bible.

You may want to do more research on the trinity. I'll tell you this also. Many people will come to you and try to deny the trinity. If you are truly saved, then God will lead you to the truth and show you who He is in truth.

Stay in the bible. The book of John is a great place to start, and John 1 also shows that Jesus is God.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God....
John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

This is talking about Jesus.

So work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. God will lead you to all truth.

Jesus is the Son of God and our Saviour. An idol is anything that you put above Him. Also, God -Jesus- Holy Spirit are the three in one - trinity so when you pray to One you pray to Them All. God is the Father, Jesus our Lord and Saviour, and the Holy Spirit guides us into all truth and is constantly making intercessory prayers for us. I know this is a tough concept to understand and not all of us believers get it totally but remember to have the faith as a little child and as you grow in grace and truth He will reveal more to you. May God Bless you and I would encourage you to seek out a bible believing church and surround yourself with fellow Christians to help you on your walk with the Lord.

God is 3 persons in one

YHWH (Yahweh) The Father often called God or The Father
Jesus Christ The Son
The Holy Spirit

3 persons but 1 God, in fact The Father is a spirit and so is The Holy Spirit, but Jesus has a Body which was resurrected, so when we get to Heaven, we will see just Jesus because the Father and the Holy Spirit dwells in Jesus.

I was raised christian. Since I was 7 I asked myself this question and many others. Maybe you should read about the history of the early christian churches in the first and second centuries as well as the jewish thought at that time.

The gospels that comprise the bible today were chosen to support the Catholic (Rome) ideology about Jesus. There were other gospels but they were suppressed.

I really dont see Jesus as god, but more as the herald for the new age/ new covenant. The Age of Pisces, just as Moses was the herald for the Age of Aries and the covenant with the Jews.

Hi!
My name is Jenna.
My kids call me Mom. My nephews call me Auntie, and my brother calls me Sister.
All of these names refer to me. I am not a different person when my daughter calls me Mommy than when my nephew calls me auntie. They are talking to the same person.

Likewise is God. He has MANY names. Allah, Jesus, "Big Guy" (lol), Holy Spirit, etc. etc.
But no matter who is calling Him by which name it does not change the fact that He is the same before and now and forever.
If you feel more comfortable calling Him God when you pray, do so. But I encourage you to educate yourself through Bible Study and learn all you can about the Truth of Jesus Christ.

Follow His heart with your feet and you'll find you have walked into heaven.

Jesus Christ died for all our sins. He is the savior and he is number one. If you believe that kind of stuff. Everything is possible with good faith. I personally think of an Idol as an object, or Paris Hilton, or "Lost for words" on U-Tube. Jesus Christ is an entity. I do believe anything is possible with Christ. But yes in a way, I guess Jesus Christ can be YOUR or my Idol. But this is often thrown around in the wrong text.

John 1:1,14
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God, and the Word was with God...and the Word became flesh.
You pray to God, in the name of Jesus, by the Holy Spirit.

Jesus is not an idol, He is God as well. He became lower than the angels to walk among us. He now sits at the right hand side of our Father.
