Hi, my 9 month old rat terrior dog is named Jackie. She and our other do Jake did it today. But I was wondering if she would be able to have puppies since she is still pretty young. She also is pretty skinny. Please help!

The dogs did it on their own. I didn't make them breed, it you know what I mean. Also, why would I have to spay Jackie?

Ok! For all you people out there you think that if she has pups if just going to throw them in a shelter. Where I live there are families who love to get little pups. For their kids and such. So shut up!

Yes if you caught them there is a good chance she will be pregnant....but take her to the vet and get a health check on her...find out why she is underweight... also get a good brand of PUPPY food high in protien and all the goodness from the vet or pet store...this will help her if she is pregnant or not...it will cost a bit more but much better than cheap brands in the supermarket....and well worth it for her health.
Get your dog spayed if you want to get your dog spayed not because these guys feel they have the RIGHT TO TELL EVERYONE TO SPAY THEIR DOGS........SHAME ON YOU ALL.........
also mark down the date the mated.... they will be birthed between 58-63 days later....you want be able to tell though until 3 weeks before unless you have a scan....make sure you feed her high protien food from vet as this will help her to be able to nurse her new borns...assisting with a good quality and quantity of milk.....when she is about to come into labour her temp will drop to between 98 -98.3 f... (its normally 100.3-101.3) she will become restless and contsantly cleaning her vulva to prepare .... she will refuse water and food ...going out to urinate to defficate more regurally. Talk to your vet and get some good books to find out more about her labour and possible complications... never leave her alone when her labour starts....she will look to you for reassurrance and you may need to call the vet if problems occur...puppies can die very quickly if you dont know what to do... so it is important to know when her labour is about to start and how to help her if difficulties occur....if you get concerned you can talk to the vet and whelp her at vets....I hope this helps....

If she was in season- which she probably was if she allowed Jake to mount her- she could certainly be pregnant. Dogs usually start to come into season around 6-7 months of age.
However, at 9 months old she is too young to breed and I'd be extremely concerned about a pregnant b*tch of any age being underweight right from the start of pregnancy. That is just asking for trouble as she will not have any reserves to maintain her health during pregnancy and will seriously compromise her health if she is trying to suckle a litter of puppies. Regardless of what you do, you should get her checked to make sure that there is no health reason to explain why she is thin, and get her onto some good quality food- ideally something designed for puppies.
I will reiterate what has already been said above. The best thing you can do for her to is get her spayed soon. Vets will have different opinions about how long after mating a dog can be spayed, but usually a week or so is just fine. As well as preventing pregnancy, this will also greatly reduce her chances of future health problems, particularly mammary (breast) cancer and pyometra- both of these are relatively common in older, entire females and both can be fatal. I'd also advise neutering your male dog.
Everything may well go smoothly for her, but a young dog in poor body condition owned by someone inexperienced has a far greater chance of something going wrong. At the worst case end of the spectrum, you could be looking at caesarian section, dead puppies, mother dead or unable to feed the pups & you having to rear them yourself. You really have to know and understand what you could be letting her and yourself in for.
Spaying her now is by far the most responsible thing to do. If nothing that has been said here can convince you to do that, I would highly recommend that you talk to your vet about using drugs to terminate the pregnancy. There are a few potential side effects associated with the treatment, but better to risk them than her getting into trouble whilst trying to whelp her litter.

It is possible for them to have pups; I mean, if she wanted to do it with Jake and was enticing him, she must be able to. However, as she is so young you will have to keep closer watch on her than you would if she were two years old (officially mature enough and old enough to have pups. For a dog, the first year is actually 15 years, not 7; I mean, a 7-year-old can't have a baby, but a fifteen-year-old can; divide that by twelve, get roughly a little more than a year a day; your dog is roughly ten years old. Wow--a ten-year-old having puppies? Not criticizing, just be watchful!)
Why spay, you ask? Well, I know a lot of people love puppies (me included!) but if these families truly wanted one they'd go to petfinder.com and save a life by adoption. You, my dear, are contributing to the overpopulation crisis by carelessly allowing her to breed; just because you didn't do it on purpose doesn't mean you're not liable. Also, she will get mammary tumors and breast cancer if you don't spay her before she's 2. When she's in heat she'll bleed all over the house. Is it worth all this for the love of pups?

Personally....at that young, and "pretty skinny" (why is she that way????) I would be worried about her health carrying puppies, and whether she'll be able to carry them to term and if she'd have problems with delivery. Really....you're getting pretty intense with people who are recommending spay for this b*tch, but it seems obvious that you weren't being a responsible pet owner if "they did it themselves". It means that you weren't paying proper attention to know that the b*tch was in season. and if she's "pretty skinny"...is she getting proper nutrition, deworming, doesn't have a health issue that is causing her to be "pretty skinny"? If it is a health issue, it could be passed on to her puppies, yet you didn't mention that being a concern. You say that there are lots of people in your area that want puppies for kids....but are you willing to be a safety net for those puppies for the rest of their lives? If they ever come up needing a home, will you take them back, for any reason, and keep them as long as necessary to find them new homes? That's part of responsible dog breeding. Another issue, since the b*tch is so young....if by chance she can not deliver her litter, are you financially prepared to pay for a c-section to deliver those puppies, and do the post surgical care required? How about if you lose your b*tch on the table? (Been there, done that, with a champion Malamute) Raising puppies on a bottle is an arduous task. I'm sure you won't like my answer either, but it's all part of what can realistically happen.

Where I live many pups are killed in the shelters every day. I wonder if you live on this planet-your world is so perfect.
You are being told to spay and neuter because people who are responsible would never have let those two dogs go near each other unless they were ready to breed. If you can't even keep control now, how will you ever get through the whole process without jeopardizing your dog's life and the puppies welfare? Do you think if your girl is pregnant she will live through this pregnancy? Did you even think about that?
People who are this careless should only be allowed to have dogs that are fixed.

Whether or not you "want" puppies is beside the point...unless you're an experienced breeder, be responsible and get her spayed. How dare you bring more puppies in this world when you can't even bring yourself to use a term other than "do it" and know nothing about basic dog breeding? I saw a man bring a 6 week old Chihuahua into PetsMart's vet clinic the other day...the only one of the litter that survived because he and his redneck family didn't know **** about what they were doing when they let their dogs "do it".
Grow up and stop playing around with something as sacred as life, or don't own dogs.
Your reply about about being justified in breeding because of families near you that "love to get pups" is so juvenile beyond words...you are just another thoughtless, immature backyard breeder, who (unfortunately for the dog that got stuck with you and whatever pups come of it), will see your puppies die off one by one due to your ignorance. Have fun!

Owning 3 Welsh Pembroke myself I have taken the time to study up on breeding them. The most common answer is that they should not whelp a litter past 7 years of age. If you would like to become a breeder I would suggest that you study online, become a member of a corgi association, talk to your local vet and breeders. There are so many factors to take into consideration, and costs involved as well. I would recommend that you do not breed this corgi in question. Take your time and research breeding and then make an educated decision on whether you can handle all of the responsiblites involved.

She should be at least a yr before getting her into such. Honestly, I wouldn't breed her, it takes away from her life span, an it's not the best thing to do.
**I read your update and if your saying the dog's had sex then theres big chances your dog is pregnant. She's probably gonna have difficulties though. You should call your vet asap!**
Btw; to the answer up top, yes dogs CAN be TOO YOUNG to have puppies smh, as I said before, she should be at least 1 yr.
**Read your update again; How do not understand? Breeding a dog takes life away from her, she'll die younger, isn't that a good enough reason? She's only 9 month's and your said she's skinny, she's most likely gonna have problem's that will hurt her an the pup's. It's like a 10 yr old child getting pregnant...smh! Just learn your fact's before you hurt her, honestly, don't take this in the wrong way!**

well if you saw her mating she's got a good chance to be preggers. NOw an underweight 9 month olds chances of an uncomplicated pregnancy & delivery are equlient to an anerexic13 yr olds girls chances. Get to your vet ASAP for damage control (thereis a morning after treatment for dogs, but that may not be your best option)

She is too young to be getting pregnant. You need to be consulting with your vet for exact times, but most dogs do not go into heat until they are one year olds.
Dogs have been known to become pregnant before their first heat is observed.
Think about having both of your pups fixed, there are tens of thousands of unwanted pups in shelters around the world.
