No. And there is proof. For example--recently a proposal was brought befrore Congress to require automakers to increase the avergy efficienc from its current 17 mpg to 34 mpg over the next decade or so. This is readily achievable, by the way. That 17 mpg figure hasn't changed in 25 year--even thugh we could build 34 mpg engines then, much less now.

The oil companies responded immediately---lobbying Congress to kill the bill. I'm afraid they've succeeded for now--there's been nothing more about it.

No.The more you conserve the higher your utility bill will become and I can attest to that. And this year everyone will get an increase on the natural gas, propane and electric bills. However I still try because one day i am going to be outpriced, all that will mean is I have none while everyone else just pays more,it might happen in my lifetime, our very frist light bill was $.49 cents now it runs way over a $100.00 and thats with just about all the conserving I can do and still have electric at all.So my answer to your question would have to be no.

SUV's were shoved down our throats? Are you kidding me. Are you really that unwilling to take responsibility for your actions? There are members of OPEC that like high oil prices, like Venezuela and Iran, because they are like liberals and only focus on short term success in order to gain popularity, but most of the OPEC countries didn't want to see oil go as high as it did, mostly because of the changes everyone is trying to make now. And I hate to burst your bubble but oil companies are not worried. The main reason is that they know oil will still make up most of our energy consumption for the next 100 years even with the development of alternatives, but they're the ones investing the most in alternative sources of energy any ways. It makes sense because they have the resources and technical know how.

Well you know they do that way it cost them less and they can charge you more . Hasn't every ones bill been going up every what 3 or 4 months . I totally gutted my home insulated it completely was using a lot less gas and my bill went up imagine that . I heat with wood now and use solar panels for my lights and a propane instant hot water heater and fridge. Saving a bundle . To Hell with OPEC and the major oil company's and all you holding stock in them and to hell with the 3000 dollar bill i owe them its in my ex wife's name anyway and to hell with her to.

Utilities do, particularly residential consumers.

It costs them a lot of money to deal with variable loads. They make their money feeding base demand. Building new plants, especially if they only run part of the time, is a money loser. A good predictable factory is different.

OPEC, etc., not so much.

They would love you to because they would not have to expand and they would still be able to surface more customers. The savings wouldn't be passed on either because they would just increase the cost so as to negate any losses in consumption in the short term.

By and large they do want such efficiency. The reason is that the growing demand for electricity is out-striping available production limits.

Absolutely. The resource is finite. If demand goes down the supply lasts longer and they can charge more money for it.

It's all about the money.
