I just don't see how anyone would do something that mean.

Please, Don't say, because we need TO BE PUNISHED SO WE CAN GO TO HEAVEN AFTER WE TAKE IT.

I'd rather not.

The God of the heavens didnt invent sin, it was put into the world by Satan, a fallen angel who got prideful. It would be pointless to say because we need to be punished so we can go to heaven after we take it, because thats not how a merciful God workes. I mean if God were that way, then we would always be in a war and the world would not be at peace ever and people would be killing; Consequences often come because of something we have done, but we arn't always held accountable to what happens. I encourage you to read some of the Psalms. I dont know your story so I dont know how much more help I can be; but maybe read Psalms 92. It brings me a lot of comfort.

Because the God that you are looking for doesn't exist. People automatically try to define God as some magical being sitting up amongst the clouds, spreading his divine powers of love and concern for the human race.
This God is a myth and a human creation. Humans have corrupted their reality with superstition and magic and brought themselves to believe they are the center of the universe and everything revolves around their existence. This is a selfish and corrupting state of consciousness.
If there is a force or some kind of 'divine' deity or energy or whatever you want to think up in your mind, it isn't however the God of the bible.
In reality, 'God' would not be a personal God that made everything for the benefit of people. We are simply a fragment of all the processes and protocols that make up everything that is currently taking place. Our newly arrived presence on this infinite time-line is like a drop of water in an ever growing, already infinitely large, body of water.
God isn't a he and it isn't a she.
Religion has created a myth and manipulated the minds of those seeking their place in reality.

Consequences for our actions seems to be woven right into the tapestry that formed our cosmos.

I think the reason there are consequences for our actions because God wants us to have the knowledge of good and evil. He wants mankind to be able to make moral choices and to be moral beings. We can not possibility know what light is without experiencing darkness. We can not know what "goodness" is unless we also have the knowledge of "evil."

***UPDATE***
I noticed a lot of answers that say something to the effect, "God did not create the consequences.". I believe this is a fundamental misunderstanding of Scripture. I believe the very purpose of the Garden of Eden story is to tell us that there are in fact consequences for our actions. Did Adam and Eve choose the consequences? How about the Serpent? No and No! God was directly responsible for the consequences.

This all makes philosophical sense to me yet there are some consequences that I don't understand and I don't think its really "worth" going through. Yet we go through them anyways, whether you believe in God or not. Mankind must learn to persevere and grow stronger through such consequences and continue to do our part in making this world a better place.

God created a perfect world to live in. We were the ones who ruined it and then compounded our suffering by trying to place the blame on others. In Genesis the penalty for eating of the tree was death not necassarily suffering. The struggle to survive was Adams punishment and pain during childbirth and submission to man was Eves punishment. It was because God loved us so much that he allowed for a second chance at a perfect life through Jesus.

When you love a child you tell him no. You don't tie him to a chair so that he cannot make the choice. You show him what is and isn't allowed and then let him make the choice. You don't fail to punish but you do forgive.

In My Opinion:
Consequences are from the evil in man's hearts tempted by sin, which is, in Christian-spect, Satan.
Otherwise, we should learn from our mistakes to make the world a better place. God didn't create 1 person, he had in mind a world of people working together. Why else do they teach history in school? So we can learn from our past mistakes.
And just for the Hell of it (heh), I think that God allows the existance of Satan and sin to test our faith in Him. Why would he allow just any ol' bloke to enter the Pearly Gates?
And you have to understand that punishment may seem like a horrible thing, but we do not think like God. To God, everything that happens has a purpose behind it. We will never understand what He is thinking, so the best thing that we can do is to look for the best in any situation and try to learn from our mistakes.

God didn't create all this horrible consequences. We are doing that ourselves. You don't want to be punished for your sins. No one does, but that is how it works to get to Heaven. Think about this: Would you rather burn in Hell forever (the excruciating painful kind) just because you didn't want to believe something wonderful like God and Heaven or would you rather allow God to take over and show you something absolutely fantastic beyond your wildest dreams if you let God take over. It seems to me that you do not understand God in the first place. Here is a challenge: Honestly pray to God to show you the answer to your question whatever it is..just between you and Him...if He doesn't answer it then do as you please. If He does answer it, follow it. Don't worry about what it is or how to ask your prayer..God knows your heart and will answer accordingly.

GOD Did Not.

satan and Adam Teamed up to cause all of this hell.

Adam had it made Till he committed High Treason.
That (High Treason) kicked GOD out of this Creation (Earth and Star System--Legally)
and let satan get a hold of it (legally).

GOD has to Wait till the 6,000 Year Contract HE made with Adam (and Mankind to Rule and Reign on this Earth) is Over, Untill HE can come Back into it and Rule and Reign (Jesus Comes Back).

GOD don't Break the Contracts HE makes!

God isn't doing this, we are. Man. Not God. My God (the one I choose to believe in) is good and loving and has a great sense of humor. But he gave us all free will. Do good or do bad. It is just life. That is it. It is man, killing man. But don't always listen to the news as bad news sells so they always show the bad things. Life is not as bad as they make it seem. Don't be afraid of the future. Just live today. That is what God wants! He wants you to be happy, successful, loving, kind, generous, helpful, etc... You just have to choose to do that and forget what the world or news is telling you. I am not saying go around with rose colored glasses and ignore the problems, I am saying do what you can where you live or what you are able to do (volunteer, get involved). And smile, God loves you .XD

We have accountability and 'free will' although I hate that term. It wasn't free. Jesus paid the ultimate price for each of us. God promises us in the bible that he will not interfere with our mortal choices. It is our life and we are here to be tested, not punished as you infer. What test? To see if we will be obedient to ALL of God's laws. It is easy to say god punishes us, but if you look closely you will see that god isn't the one that punished you or whomever you are referring to...it is usually the person who committed whatever action caused the consequence. The exceptions are when children die...they are innocent and cannot be held accountable for their actions before the age of 8.
