Both, they were told to at a young age, and by the time they could have chosen their own faith, they're too deep in to choose otherwise, so they choose to believe....except for the ones who break away, such as myself. Usually due to a traumatic experience or to a wake-up call....

Wow. Check out "Catholic Crusader". Can you really use science and hardcore philosophy to prove God's existence, if you can use them to disprove it also? How does laws of man explain a God? According to his theory, it is undeniable that God exists. Therefore he believes because he has no repuatable choice. There's your third option Questioner. I'm not Christian, but i think they believe in God because it does something for them. Answers questions, gives answers, keeps them inspired and hopeful. Questions of semantics arise over the meaning of "belief". But to keep it simple, it could be both of your options (and the odd third option presented by the gentleman further above). For something so intense, I mean true Christians have a relationship with God not just acknowledge his presence, you can beleive when you're young but at a certain point one must decide what they believe. You cannot lie to yourself about a belief, and by theory, can't lie to God either.

I think even if people grew up in church all their lives at some point as they get older they have the choice. I spent my teen years hating God and I was saved in 2001. My choice, because believe me it wasn't because some said I had. That is the main reason a lot of people do not.

I believe in God because I choose to believe. I look around this beautiful earth, and see all the intricate details and know that God created them. I look at the stars, and they don't all fall. The water don't come up on the shores and drowned us. Only God could do this.

It depends on the Christian. I was raised in a moderate Baptist church allowing me the option to explore other religions and beliefs. I think now I am more spiritual, but I would still consider myself a Christian...I do think a lot of the evangelical sect is terribly scary though - Too little education and too much programming.

It actually goes in Stages...
In the Childhood stage, you believe because you are told to. In the adolscent stage you begin to form your own belief system...
and in the Adult stage you believe because you want to. These stages can overlap, like a graph of three overlapping circles. If you are late to believing in GOD...you go through all the stages sort of simultaneously.
