i have asked the same question myself. I know the locals do not use this. I hate it. It It reminds me of the word Frisco. So for me it is Always San Francisco and Northern and Sourthern California.

I am a California local and use this term all the time. You guys hate a word? Come on. Paris Hilton had the right answer AGAIN!. Get over it.
Actually it has come into use since the Govenator started using the pronunciation CALI fornia. If you have to be mad at someone, blame it on Arnold.
Of course we could always just call it Ca. But the connotations are not great!

Well, truth be told, in 1542 when Portuguese Explorer Juan Cabriho (bastardized by the Spanish to Cabrillo) was commissioned by the government of Guatemala to explore New Spain's northern frontiers under the Spanish flag ,on the ship SAN SALVADOR, he landed on this very day (October 13th) in Santa Barbara in 1542 and sent a party ashore....When they came back to the ship he said "How is it" and the crew boss said "Muy CALIente" because the was quite hot...and Cabrillo said "I shall henceforth call this land 'CALI' " because the "northern frontier of New Spain" takes too long to write in my diary/journal and besides I am Portuguese. The gods punished Cabrillo for calling California "Cali" by making him slip and cut himself as he got out of a boat on Catalina Island, there being no Bactine there, he died there on January 3rd, 1543. The term is still prevalent to this day...and is a particular favorite of "locals"...

I hate this expression, too, and was curious whence it came. I have been told by numerous people that it is in the lyrics of a song written by that disgraceful thug Tupac Shakur.

As I learned in Calif.History; There were myths that comprised the lore of Calif. Mainly that it was an *island with *no men, run by *Queen Califia, and that the *streets were paved with gold, and here you would find the *Straight of Anian/Anion.
