The elevation or "up/down" knob goes on the top and the windage or "left/right" knob goes on the right side. After you have your scope set in the rings but before you tighten it down, look through your scope and make sure that the eye piece is at thre correct distance from your eye. Next, make sure that the verticle crosshair is in absolute alignment with the barrel. That is, make sure that the bottom of the crosshair is right in the center of your barrel. A better way to do this is to buy an alignment device that fits into the muzzle of your rifle. They are available from Cabela's or Brownells. If you have your scope canted, you will never be able to get it sighted in properly.
