When did "Religion" become a bad word?
I'm baffled at how the word "religion" is almost always used in a derogatory way lately. When did that happen? It reminds me of how, a long time ago, the word "gay" used to mean "happy". (It still does in a dictionary.) But now if you tell someone, "gee, you sure are gay today", they might think you're calling them a homosexual.

Words have been getting twisted up a lot in modern culture. No wonder people don't communicate very well.

The Merriam-Webster defines "religion" as:
- : the service and worship of God or the supernatural: commitment or devotion to religious faith or observance
- : a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices

Sounds okay to me. Any worshippers of ANY religion have a problem with that definition? I believe that people who say "religion" in a negative way are the "do-your-own-thing" type of people. They "personalize" God, and forget that we are a human family, and like all families, we have our traditions: They forget that families have special days, special little things they do AS a family, and so does the family of God.

I love my Catholic faith, I love my Catholic religion, and I love my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

It is important to be on the same page as other people, and most of us are not. Religion has carried a connotation of ceremony, worship, rituals and rules. Religions, like Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, prescribe a way of life; rules and regulations. Spirituality can embrace a God(s) while still maintaing your own form of adoration or worship. I think that is his beef. To use the common example- he doesn't have to go to church every sunday, and will still go to heaven. Or he believes in a God, but doesn't hold the Bible as His word. Refer to it as you said- his set of beliefs. Try to understand what he actually does believe, and why it defers from what we commonly call religions.

And on the bible business... I'm not positive about the religion being wrong thing. One thing I do know, is when the Bible was being translated, pagans (worshipers of multiple gods) were quite a threat (Romans!). Their system of worship, ceremony, and all that is what we might refer to now as a cult. But Christianity started as a cult. What is the difference between religion and a cult then- here's the kicker: the number of people who follow it!

I usually speak of my faith, or my beliefs. Not so much religion. My spirituality rests on my personal relationship with Lord Jesus Christ, not in man-made traditions, and such. I think that is probably where he is coming from. Try talking about his faith, his belief, or his relationship with Christ. He might feel better about it that way.

I would say that I too, and not sure why religion got such a bad wrap. Like it's a swear word or something. Yet, I find the more my relationship and faith grows, the less religious it looks. If that makes sense. LOL

God bless.

There is nothing wrong with the word religion---your religion is how you become spiritual. People who hold something against a particular Faith---usually it is a Fundamentalist will say they are spiritual more than religious---I say they are just stupid because they think more about what the world thinks of them than anything else and they just have to be politically correct.

well just fyi, spiritualism/spirituality is a religion in itself. A religion is simply a specific system of beliefs with some code of ethics.
Just so you do not fight over semantics, why don't you just ask, "Honey what do you believe about this or that ?".

Religions are a dime a dozen. I can understand why your husband doesn't like you refering to his faith as a religion. If your husband (and you) have accepted Jesus as his Savior and Lord, then your husband has a 'faith' - not a religion.

You don't have faith in a religion. You have 'faith in God'. Faith in Jesus Christ. I hope this helps.

Religion is traditions of man. Jesus told the pharisees they make void the word of God with their traditions'. Since John 1 says Jesus is the word, He is saying that their traditions keep them from understanding Him(God's word). So it is a 'relationship'(with Jesus) that is required of God. Not traditions(religion). If your husband confesses that Jesus is Lord then He is following Him. If not then his spirituality is founded on something else. (some tradition) You are still commanded to submit to your husband until He develops His relationship with Jesus correctly. And he is commanded to love you. I would ask people to pray for Him and agree with you that His relationship with Jesus is correct. Call 1-800-759-0700 for more help.

Your husband is right. RELIGION is of MAN. FAITH is given by the Lord in heaven. As all of the faithful, HE is the temple of the Lord which no man can BUILD or CREATE.
