It depends-are you already physically active, like playing sports or physical at work? Then you can work out longer and harder. If you have basically been sedentary up to now start with no more than half an hour of aerobic exercise and the same for strength training.
If you start out doing too much you will get sore and not be able to do it for a few days.

If you're just starting out don't overdo the work out, your muscles will be sore the following day or two. I would suggest going every other day, and when you do go, don't do a complete body work out....instead break down your body into half. Work your upper body one day, and alternate to the lower body the next visit to the gym. This way your whole body doesn't feel sore. After about 3 weeks your body will get used to the idea that you are making it a routine and you can start going on a more regular basis.

You need to go to the gym and ask the personal trainers some questions about how to work out properly and how much cardio to do and when to do it. No person on here is going to be able to tell you what to do in a short answer

I would defiantly get a trainer, if you are going to the gym. This Will allow you to keep on track and have a plan when you are at the gym. If you can not afford a personal trainer, I would research different exercise routines and stick to one.

well, you should start out doing 20-30 min of lite cardio.. brisk walk on treadmill, biking, etc, then maybe another 20- 30 min of combined weight exercises concentrating on what you choose. good luck
