It's ok for a temporary home. As the others stated, an aquarium doesn't allow for good ventilation. Until you can get an actual hamster cage make sure you keep the cage really clean and use a bedding that doesn't have a lot of dust. Aspen bedding works well.
Also, beware that a hamster may be able to escape easily unless you provide a lid. A screen lid is the way to go, as the aquarium lids provide little space for air flow.
Just be sure and get a good roomy multilevel wire cage as soon as you can get the funds together ok?

Yes it is okay to keep a hamster in a fish tank. My cousin once had a hamster and she used a fish tank. As long as you give the hamster everything it needs it will be fine. It is also a good idea to have a lid on the tank because my cousin's hamster climbed out of the fish tank by climbing on its toys. I Hope that helped.

Yes, it's ok for a hamster to live in a fish tank as long as it doesn't have water and proper air circulation. Also, make sure it has bedding, a water bottle, exercise wheel, and food!

My hamster alwayse chewed on his bars no matter how much i gave him to play with so i resorted to a ten gallon fish tank. He lived for 2 1/2 years in that tank and did just fine. Just make sure that the air quality in there is good and make sure he can't jump out because it could hourt itself badly. and make sure you keep it clean very often. the down side to fishtanks is that the smell can buld up faster and the hamster can get sick or die. also make sure the tank isn't in direct sunlight keep in in a cool place thats not very bright and make sure it has a house to go into. just make sure it's not to cold or your hammy will hibernate.

Yes, but you need to make sure you use a bedding with no dust. So wood shavings and some paper-based wouldn't work. You can use newspaper all torn, but the ink should not stain when it's wet. Towel(paper towl, or cloth) strips would be nice too. You'd also have to replace the bedding daily because of bad ventilation.

Not the best situation, air circulation is quite poor. Get a plastic bottom cage with coated wire sides that allows for proper air circulation.

Yes, (as long as it isn't filled with water)
Fish tanks are better because they can't chew through them like they do the plastic cages.
I have even kept them in a metal bird cage. They love to climb up the sides.

people do, however, it is NOT good for the hamster as the air quality and circulation is poor. the air is often much more damp in tanks as well as a result of poor circulation. hamsters that live in tanks often have a shorter life span.
