I've read some mixed answers on the internet and seen labs at dog parks act kind of bullying (but maybe just because they are so muscular).
I want to rescue a lab puppy and raise him with my current puppy who is a small breed but thinks shes big (jack russell mix) and loves playing with big dogs.
But at dog parks the golden retreiver types are nice to her and play good. The labs are rough. Is this generally how they are? thank you in advance.

For the most part labs are very friendly towards other dogs and people... my boyfriends sister has a lab and he has a thing with dogs sniffing his butt and he gets kinda grumpy so he growls a little at pups who get too close, and for one reason or another he's never liked my dog, but my dog is the only dog he hates being around... It's more or less down to the dogs personality.

Labs, as a rule, have lovely temperaments. They are intelligent and loyal, which is why they are so often used as guide dogs for the blind.
Yes, they are muscular, and sometimes the puppies trip over their own feet. But I've never come across a mean-natured or rough type Lab. Honest!
If your little Jack Russell mix has a typical JR temperament, she'll hold her own and will be just fine. Especially since she has played with Goldens already. Also, don't forget, you're bringing the Lab in as a puppy, and she'll soon let him know who is pack leader at HER house. She was there first!
Do give it a try. All the very best to you and your dog(s) ... ;-)

Labradors are some of the best dogs ever, but yes, they can be quite ruff. :) I would reccomend going to a shelter and getting a smaller Lab mix. Avoid the Lab puppies, as you never know how big they'll get, and as with all puppies, they are always the first ones to find a home. Try getting an older dog. They are less likely to get adopted, just because they lost their "puppy face", and they are less likely to change, both in size and personality. Good luck! :)

Most labs that I know are VERY friendly dogs, with everyone and everything. But they are sometimes Very high energy. That can sometimes be mistaken as bullying, I guess. Just because they are so big, they accidentally knock small dogs down. If your little dog can keep up with the big dogs, I think you will be fine. You can visit your local animal shelter and find labs and lab mixes that you like. Introduce your dog to the new dog before you decide to adopt it, and choose to adopt the dog that gets along best with your dog. Good Luck!!!

I sure wouldn't chance this, at all. Your jack russell may like to play with the big dogs, but the big dog may not feel that way, once it matures into adulthood. Consult the dog pros before you place any kind of a dog that will be large, in with a smaller one. You may come home some day & find the smaller one mangled up or dead, & it would break your heart. I think Labs are domineering dogs, myself, but I've never had one; I just base my opinion on all the ones in our neighborhood.

Labs are wonderful dogs. My family and I had a lab husky cross for seventeen years and she was very well behaved and friendly to all other animals and people, unless she sensed that any of us were in danger. She would then asssume a defensive stance, and watch us for clues if she needed to bark a warning or not.
As long as you introduce them slowly to each other, and give your Jack Russel lots of attention so that she does not feel neglected; you should be fine.
Some shelters will even allow potential adopting families to bring other well behaved family pets to visit with the potential adoptee and spend some time playing together and getting to know each other.
They will be great friends and companions for each other and you and your family.
Bless you for wanting to adopt a dog, that is wonderful.
Have a great day.

Yes! Labs are a wonderfully kind and playful breed. Known for them being playful and entergetic, they are able to get a long with many breeds of dog. At least this is what I have observed from them. Yellow labs are more reserved and perhaps quiet while if you get a black lab, they seem to be a lot more frantic and playful/ entergetic. I guess that it really all depends on the dog's personality. Like people, animals are all different in personality ranges.

The Lab may play a bit rougher, but if raised from a puppy they should get along. The smaller dog will probably end up being the Alpha..LOL..Just make sure to have good training, Labs stay puppies for quite a while.

I have a small breed puppy and I know many lab owners. All the labs get along great with my puppy. If she gets a little too rambunctious for the old ones they simply wander away. I love lab's and completely trust them with my puppy.

We had a lab and he was Best Friends with a Dalmatian. My sister now has a black lab and a jack Russel and they get along great together. I think its just how much time you work on it. Getting your dog socialized as a big thing
