Make the custard in saucepan, transfer to anything. Thomas Keller has used egg shells to hold custard and you can place them in egg cups. Get creative. For appetizers you can use won-ton spoons.

You can make it in a larger round casserole dish and then spoon out individual servings. Make sure you have a dish that will fit in a pan that can serve for the water bath. Obviously, the baking time will be longer for the larger dish.

I always make mine in a 2 1/2 quart round casserole dish. And then I serve it in pretty dessert dishes!

Soup bowls, if they are oven safe- it should say on the bottom. Or even mugs...
